That said, I haven't gambled since May, and possibly earlier than that. Unless you count the $5 holdem mini tournament I played backstage on "1 vs. 100" while waiting to get on. I lost (both the poker and the Game Show). My episode is this Friday. I'm part of the 100, not the 1 (I think I was #37 or so).

The mini holdem tournament was exciting though. I was heads-up and outchipped by about 3-2, when I was dealt 9-6. Flop came K-10-7 rainbow. My opponent bet small and I called. Turn came an 8. He bet, I raised all-in, and he called with 10-8.

River was a 10.

Is not the show wholly set in an urban setting, except when they did/do the occasional field trip to a farm somewhere? It's always urban kids. They didn't teach Spanish numbers in the 70s for nothing.

Anyway, the only ones of these shows I know at all are Sesame St. and Electric Company (which I hate, mainly for the theme song, the refrain of which is now lodged in my head). Kinda glad I was living abroad and missed a bunch of this stuff.

Hmm. I think "cable" also meant something different in Canada than in the U.S. If you got cable in Canada, it meant you got Canadian private programming as well as access to the US networks. That option was around since the 60s in Canada. If you didn't have "cable," you just got Canadian public television -- the CBC.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say it was a program for "inner city urban children". It was certainly set in a fictional New York City neighborhood.

Nor do I know what you mean when you say it is a "suburban phenonmenon" (sic). But I'm pretty sure that kids in urban, suburban and even rural areas watch Sesame.

Yes! And the UHF channels often had local programming, like Philly's own Dancin' on Air, where you could see your friends boogie-ing down after school.

My parents managed to convince me that there was only PBS and the Football Channel (which only worked on the weekends). It wasn't until I was in kindergarden that I was told about anything else. I didn't get cable until I moved into the first apartment which had me as a leaseholder in 1995. My music video experience was limited to Friday Night Videos, which were very fuzzy so they must have been on one of the UHF stations.

I count four channels there, Burger. I got one. One. And it was government-run. Children's programming, some excellent science and nature shows, news, and Hockey Night in Canada.
