I'm pretty sure he's only mean to people he doesn't like. I'm also pretty sure that he rather likes his kid. Kid'll be ok.

If there were actual concerns about race being a factor in determining who gets playing time, that is one thing, but that does not seem to be the case here. It seems like your husband was using whatever leverage he could so he could get the ego gratification of having a kid who is a starter.

She meant "party," which is a right fought for for close to two decades, but, as you correctly note, not yet enacted.

Depends on how big the secret society is, no? Also, loose lips sink ships, yes?

Oh, I posted before your edit. Sorry you experienced that and that your parents weren't self-aware and selfless enough to do everything they could to prevent that sort of damage and situation. Clearly, it carries with you, both in your interactions with the world and your one-dimensional view of others' lives. But you needn't project here. The single thing in the world my ex- and I do agree on, and on which I trust him and he trusts me, is to do everything in our power to put the littles first and for them to feel first and foremost loved. I'm not worried or insecure about that, but that is because it's a given and the very top priority in life. Were I guilty or neglectful or secretly ashamed about my behavior, I might try to project on others the worst of me. Instead, I just watch you do it.

"The littles?"
Do you ever actually say that out loud around other people?

Um, not sure. It's an annoying little phrase I picked up from some writer, some awful Brit affectation. But whatever, they won't be that little forever, so soon I'll stop. I will be happy to say to you as often as you like, though.

Isn't there an important difference between competitive leagues, like the one that sent Michael Jordan home, and the leagues set up just to get kids exposed to the sport?

yes. rec leagues tend to have minimum playing time- not equal, but minimum, for all kids. I coached in those for awhile. Now I control taking talented kids to tournaments or leagues with Hank as the judge and rules.
if her kids wasn't getting the league mandated playing time, and the kid actually was at practice*, then daddy had a legitimate complaint. of course, then he would not have to play the "race card," so that probably is not the case.
within the range of playing time above "minimum" parents can be a total headache. they always think their kids are great, or as good, or it's just for fun. Meanwhile some kids work harder and are better. the last rec league thing I coached was a nightmare.
*coaching my daughter in rec basketball, after 5 weeks of pre first game practice, a girl who was new to basketball showed up for the first time AT THE FIRST GAME. Everyone plays at least 1.5 quarters? i go to the person running the league- surely this is an exception? nope. play her.
the other 11 kids had worked hard within their talents to learn to play. then first game we are trying to play with a big hole on the court. its really not fair to the kids.

When I was a kid, I took classes over the summer (for fun, because I'm that much of a geek*), and I ended up in a basketball class through the program one year. I will never forget the end of the class evaluation that started with: "Although [RT] is not blessed with natural talent for basketball, she comes in with enthusiasm and ready to play. ..." I thought it was a kind way of saying that I sucked.
*Read some of the course descriptions. God help me, some of them still look pretty cool.
