ESPN interview re: Lance's NYC marathon.
Lance Armstrong:
"I don't need to win anything here. I know I'm not going to win. But I have little competitions with myself. The other day I ran a mile as fast as I could. I wanted to see how fast I could run. I had a time in mind, maybe 5:00, 5:05 and I ended up beating that by quite a lot. I ran in 4:51. That was a victory for me."
4:51? I'm beginning to think that cyclists aren't really endurance athletes.

Or, some people (hi Miss Manners!) would call that being polite.

How does the time it takes Lance to run a mile bear on whether cyclists are endurance athletes? Also, is a 4:51 mile really slow in your world? Because it seems pretty fast to me.

Sounds fast to me too. But how fast one can run one mile has nothing to do with marathon performance, whether on a bike or on foot. I think we need to delve into this topic further.

Isn't running a mile more of a sprint than a test of endurance?
