This is what enables them to compete with Kenyans and Ethiopians in road races around the world, notwithstanding their stumpy legs and long kayaks. When then run, they start out in extra sealskins. This makes them sweat profusely. Then they strip off the sealskins, and the sweat freezes, forming a layer of ice on the body. This is called "layering." Much like an iglu, warm air is trapped under the ice, next to the skin, providing insulation, and yet the ice does not melt because it is so freaking cold outside. This trick is just part of the Eskimo heritage of running. A little known fact is that the Eskimos have hundreds of words for running, including esoteric words like "sprint" and "bonk" that have been incorporated into the English language.
I just want Polartec fleece made out of recycled soda bottles, which is of course, eco friendly. You have to bring layers of body ice into this?

I really liked "Our friend, the ptarmigan." Because it's cute, and I don't know how to pronounce it.

I don't think any more or less of it because of Lance's marathon time. Nevertheless, I expected Lance to be faster in the marathon based on his superior VO2 max/lactate thresholds and general endurance conditioning. Can you honestly say you're not surprised that he wasn't faster?
His pacesetter (Alberto Salazar?) for the first part of the marathon mentioned that Lance was talking much more easily than he (the pacesetter) was, and attributed it to his cardio fitness.

I am surprised he didn't finish faster. His comments in the NYT made him seem more human than he has struck me before. He said he started feeling nervous when he saw the elite marathoners (and their skinny legs), and the crowd.

"I don't need to win anything here. I know I'm not going to win. But I have little competitions with myself. The other day I ran a mile as fast as I could. I wanted to see how fast I could run. I had a time in mind, maybe 5:00, 5:05 and I ended up beating that by quite a lot. I ran in 4:51. That was a victory for me."

4:51? I'm beginning to think that cyclists aren't really endurance athletes.
Did you read his post-race interview? He said running the marathon was the single hardest thing he's ever done. And since he wouldn't have been tested for it, he was surely doped to the gills.

you should be careful about giving advice. the Eskimo layer trick only works AFTER one is physically fit. for someone who has belly rolls, the flab would bounce and crack the ice covering, assuming they go faster than 15 minute miles. once the ice breaks, the cold gets in.

Maybe he's just slow. Or maybe he was out Saturday night whoring around and he was just a little hung over. Or maybe the early start messed up his doping schedule--Le Tour starts a little later in the day.

Our friend, the ptarmigan
It seems to me that the cute little ptarmigan will be awfully cold if its feathers are taken away to be someone's scarf.
