Mr. Meaty
So my friend, who is a devout vegetarian, says her daughter's favorite show is Mr. Meaty. I don't know this Mr. Meaty person, but is that ironic?

That's not what I meant, and you and Hank know it.

Go ask Fringey. She apparently denies knowing him too.

I just want my meteorologist to tell me what the weather is going to be with some measure of accuracy. I'm not sure why Today or GMA has a weatherman -- why not just break to the local affiliates?

That, combined with this:

She looks the best she has in years. I bet she wishes real life were like Dallas and she could wake up and find it was all a dream.

I believe that willingly allowing yourself to get sucked into watching network tv should foreclose any ability to complain about content or personalities (hi ncs!). The knowledge that all content and personalities on network tv are crap is at the same level as the knowledge that cigarettes will kill you and that fast food will make you fat. [Diatribe concluded].

Don't give me that bullshit. When Rush Limbaugh was brought on ABC or ESPN to stir the shit and did by saying McNabb got attention and acclaim because he was black and if he was white would be just another quarterback, Tom Jackson, I believe broke from football analysis to let everyone know how he felt about it. Bryant Gumble, a former Today Show shil left to take control of his own destiny and has his own show where he chooses the stories, comments on them, asks tough questions (race, class, whatever) and pompous as he may be, doesn't turn off who he is to shuffle to an homogenous beat.
The point is not about whether Roker is a weathermen or works for a network. The point is that he has no substance or personality. He has the job and is appealing because he has removed any hint of race from his persona so completely, that he is an embarassment. He shuffles along, dodging any and every issue that would reveal an independent thought and he's happy to do it.
Network tv has plenty of people who exhibit personality. Hell, on The View, they supposedly go back and forth on political issues all the time. Katie Couric has been known to throw tough questions out there. Oprah Winfrey is on a network and she most certainly has an opinion on most everything. There are countless examples.
Al Roker is not just a weatherman. He is an icon and an integral part of The Today Show. He conducts interviews and does his own pieces. Although he's had his opportunities, he has designed his career around being nothing and that's the point.

You know that's an asinine response, TM. First off, Matt doesn't ask tough questions, he backs off of them. Even more so with Katie. But even if they do, when does the weatherman ask tough questions? They don't ask questions at all--they give a 15 second summary of the national weather.
So, what you must be talking about are the fluff pieces he does later in the show. Well, those are fluff pieces, and he does as much with them as katie, matt, meredith, anne, or any of others do, which is fawn over stars, let the info-people tell you about the newest thing in health care/travel/cars/etc., and smile when they eat the food.
You know, unless you're being obtuse, that Steven Smith or "uppity" black men have nothing to do with anything we're talking about. You want a weatherman who does something more than being a weatherman, but that's not the role, whether it's Al, Willard, or the goofy guy from the local NBC affiliate who fills in occasionally.
|
Uh...you brought in Steven A. Smith and you reached for him for a reason. You tell me why his was the first name you came up with.
I'm going to try not to repeat myself 100 times, but I will tell you again that I have seen Al Roker dodge issues that would have required him to take a stand or ask a question about race. He does this while smiling and shuffling and playing the role of the Today Show fool. I do not respect him for this. Why the fuck do you care whether I respect him or not?
