Maybe a gift certificate to Sport Chalet? Surely there's a local one.

Oh no. Please don't tell me you're on my team. I worry enough that I'm a bad example.

NO, not cheese.
Actually, gifts that it seems like someone put a lot of thought into, but are just completely wrong, kind of make me want to cry.

I would get cash from 3 of 5 gift giving aunt/uncles (Hollywood gave cool gifts- I won't even mention because you would all be jealous). One sort of boring non-hip aunt bought gifts.
I liked the gifts. It was something to open and at least showed some thought.
when I was like 10, boring gift giving aunt asked me how I got some new thing. I said: "bought it with my birthday money. Some of my aunts give me money." she said "ohh" like in a snotty way. I didn't mean it that way.
After that she gave me cash, even though I told her twice that I liked when she gace me gifts.
Tying posts- she now has had her teeth fucked up by a dental clinic- not the incisors- and i have to handle getting them to fix her teeth- AND I WON"T GET MONEY FOR IT.

this post not only shows an ignorance of how I draft my posts, it also shows ignorance of how GWNC reads posts.

|
Enh. It's the whole condescending attitude that bothers me. The idea that he seems to be saying "my art is more important than your humdrum life. Did I inconvenience you with my chickens? Too bad -- people will laugh at it."
I don't have your subway riding experience, but I've had some strange things happen on my commutes. I'd be less amused after the fact if I later learned that they were staged for your amusement. Hell, they made part of a pretty popular movie around here, and I'm still annoyed that they blocked a road to do it.

Whatever. Again, I haven't seen the movie, but if some clueless foreign guy comes to my house and tells me his custom is to give the host a bag of feces (or whatever he did), I would either tell him to get out (because he's clearly full of shit) or would laugh at how silly the whole thing is. Same with calling my wife ugly. Kick him out or laugh about it. There's no big injury here. I'm pretty sure no one has been emotionally scarred -- especially after finding out the whole thing was bullshit and part of his character.
|
No, I doubt that anyone is emotionally scarred. But it's just rude to do that to people for my daughter's amusement -- people who (I assume) haven't done anything other than be stupid enough to believe the language of the releases.

I love you, too. And what I said ain't garbage -- this is his schtick, and to say that he provides an important public service by exposing what Middle America thinks about queers, Jews, chicks, and blacks suggests that you're giving him a pass on everything else. And, if you are, so be it.

I am talking about how he gets people to say offensive things about jews and women. It is eye-opening that normal people (that's right, not public figures -- I don't encounter public figures and generally don't give a shit what they think -- or elected officials) feel comfortable enough around this guy and a camera to say the types of offensive things they do. I think he is skilled at bringing that out. And you know what? I want to see it. I was surprised that he was able to get a whole bar full of people to sing "Throw the Jew Down the Well." I am surprised at the level of sexism that people find acceptable. I am not so surprised that people say so many homophobic things, but it's all disturbing. And although one can argue about the socio-political statements his skits make, I think people need to see how stupid they look when they act this way, especially since I constantly hear about how racism and sexism don't really exist anymore.
|
I agree with you, in part, about the stuff you said about exposing the prevelance of racisim, sexism, etc. Should he get a pass for that? I dunno.
And maybe the two sides of Borat are inseperable. Or maybe (as the Not Bobette says) I am just an old fuddy-duddy. But I just have real issues with the other stuff he does, which strikes me not as "exposing" anything other than the gullibility and politeness of ordinary people.
And, really, what aspect of his schtick are they pushing in the ads, by the way? Heck, rumor has it that the "Throw the Jew Down The Well" episode has been deep-sixed by HBO.
