How could you NOT have heard about the Hold Steady? I don't own any of their albums, but they've gotten a TON of press the past three months.

Do I have to mention that The Killers have a polarizing new album out? Is everyone aware that Lady Sovreign is the new Streets? Should everyone be warned that while Angels & Airwaves sucks in ways different from the way Blink-182 sucked, it still sucks?
I had sort of generally heard about the Hold Steady, but in a sort of background, yeah there's buzz about this band but I haven't gotten around to paying attention to it, sort of way. I needed someone to make me pay attention (which eventually came from a recommendation on a Westerberg board).

The Killers suck. Always and forever.

Zero 7? It is hard for me to cut you slack on that, and I like Thievery Corporation.
I know the trendy pose is to prefer Air to Zero 7, but this isn't like preferring McCartney to Lennon. Downtempo may be as critically reviled today ask ska was 25 years ago (hi Hank!), but I still like it.

They should probably be whipping themselves AND Jenny Lewis into a writhing, pre-orgasmic frenzy, but sure, yeah, good point.

they play them on sirius Faction. I remember having a medium strong opinion but can't remember is it was positive or negative.

NotBob Snaps on Streets of Manhattan

  • BORAT star Sacha Baron Cohen was beaten up by a passer-by after he tried to play a prank as his alter ego.

He approached the man and said: “I like your clothings. Are nice! Please may I buying? I want have sex with it.”

But the bystander didn’t see the joke. He took one look at Cohen and punched him in the face.

The funnyman — known for his Borat catchphrase “Jagshemash!” — yelled for help but was slugged again and again.

He was rescued by actor pal Hugh Laurie who had been on his way to a New York bar with Cohen.

Laurie rushed to help and pushed the man away as Cohen struggled to his feet. A pal of Cohen said: “Sacha couldn’t resist playing the fool as Borat, but picked on the wrong person.

“I guess this guy thought he was being attacked by someone unstable and lashed out. Sacha is very lucky he didn’t get a much worse beating.”

linky

As it happens, saved by House. Hunh. NotBob, what was he like?

Ha, that's pretty good. I don't understand why some people are so against mash-ups when they are really just a half step away from traditional hip hop sampling.

Listen, I am not against downtempo as a rule. Like I said, I am a fan of Thievery Corp and lots of similar groups/DJs/producers. And I think I have mentioned that I may or may not have had occasion to enjoy the infrequent puff of a cannabis-related cigarette, albeit inadvertently. But it just seems like Zero 7 is on the creatively bankrupt side of the downtempo spectrum, which may help lead to the critical revulsion you speak of. But I will give them a second chance.

Maybe.

I agree that the Killers should suck. But their garbage is so fucking catchy.

You're welcome. They're an emo side-project from one of the guys from Blink-182. I thought everyone knew they sucked, but apparently not.

Oh, and for the record, my original music post last night had the link to that Sony commercial. They've done a new one with a bunch of paint that's also worth a look. The Brits get cooler commericals than we do, even for the same products.
