As we pour more and more resources into the country, I think we can/should expect there to be lists like this detailing some major improvement in their situation. But I think it's as misleading to focus on the raw numbers of what's been achieved "on the ground" over there as it is to focus solely on the unrest of the continuing low level guerrila warfare in the "small segment" of the country infested with the dead-enders.

Somewhat related question: has it been stated or can anyone speculate as to whether Bremer somehow will be affected by the recent injection of Condi Rice into the command structure in the admin's iraq efforts? I've been traveling for a couple of weeks; since coming back I've read and seen various allusions to Condi's added responsibilities, but most of these assert that her increased influence comes at the expense of Rumsfeld and the DoD. If she's making Iraq decisions doesn't that mean Bremer loses some autonomy as well? If so, I'd find these "Things are improving there, Bremer is doing a good job, just let him be" arguments and numbers less persuasive if the admin effectively just added a new supervisor for his efforts.

Or is it that Bremer was strictly a "cleaner", a guy you send into the tough situations to make things right, like the Wolf in Pulp Fiction. So, now that he's got everything going so well it's the natural progression that we'd have the National Security Advisor take on an added role. Is this the spin, or did I miss more than I thought during my absence?

Faced with mounting criticism over the mess that is Iraq,* the Kay Report's confirmation that we've found no WMD, and the Valerie Plame scandal, the Bush Administration decided this week to launch a PR offensive to defend its Iraq policy. Not surprisingly, this quickly turned into an effort to try to scare people by linking Iraq with terrorism. Two days ago, Condi Rice gave a speech and said the following:

We have no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved in the September 11th attacks. Yet the possibility remained that he might use his weapons of mass destruction or that terrorists might acquire such weapons from his regime, to mount a future attack far beyond the scale of 9/11.

Today, it was Cheney's turn to beat the drum:

Vice President Dick Cheney today said terrorists are "doing everything they can" to get weapons of mass destruction that could kill hundreds of thousands of Americans "in a single day of horror." His comments came in the latest in a series of speeches top administration officials are giving in hopes of curbing criticism over the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

This story was accompanied by a timely leak about Al Qaeda and anthrax. Any apparent reason why this would be leaked today? Only political convenience.

They don't want to talk about Iraq, and are trying to scare people with new threats of terrorism. They are absolutely shameless.

While this is no doubt a campaign to garner support, do you doubt the truth of these statements? Or do you think they are lying, hyping, etc. to move public opinion?
