You are correct in that the law should apply to everyone. That was my point. Penalize the asshole on the street who bought out the rest of the batteries and is trying to sell them. And penalize the gas station who jacks the price up 10x the normal price. Punish everyone!

We could start by pegging your hourly rate to its value in a context of theoretical abundance of the resource, for example, your day if you didn’t post here.

Inspired by this call, I reset our fees so they go up whenever there is a shortage, so if an attorney has already billed 8 hours in a day, the 9th hour is 2x, the 10th 3x, etc.
I think this will be great. We're already talking about firing a couple associates so we can make more money.

I have transitioned to a place where I only need to bill 1,300 hours/year in order to make significantly more money. Lucky for you, that gives me way more time to post here.
I was punished enough at my last gig.
And having to deal with your boring ass posts is punishment enough for everyone already.

Apparently there's a plan afoot hereabouts to make everything log their time. I have no time for that nonsense.

Every few years, my boss mentions something about that, but she then realizes she'd have to do it too, and the matter is dropped.

You'll never get surge pricing with hours like that.

My big law firm bled people over the last 20 years. we periodically have a "former Big Law" cocktail party to stay in touch. the one thing EVERYONE in house says is best is just that, no recording billing.

Honestly, this is one thing I never understood. I do understand that "billing" or logging time when you are in-house would be incredibly annoying. ("Talk to colleague at the next urinal -- .2"). But at a law firm, meh. It's just no big deal, to me.
There are many, many things about this job that stress me out. Writing stuff down on a green sheet, which results pretty directly in me getting money, isn't one of them.

It's the whole system. There are days when I want to write down: "2.0 Saved your ass from incredibly expensive stupidity, should be billed at 10,000% premium, billing by the hour sucks", and other days when the right entry is "2.0 spun wheels, went down rabbit holes, checked out dead ends - glad I bill by the hour!"

The best part of my job is dealing with a huge range of interesting issues, and getting to pay other lawyers to do the stuff I don't want to do.
