There is no economy in this city, probably state, reopening or not.
I'd say a good 50 percent of the people I know socially are in O&G. This is absolutely devastating. Worse than the 80s.

That's not true. The place in the country the hardest hit right now is southwest Georgia. Population density plays a role, but not as big of a role as a lot of people think. This outbreak is thought to be due to two funerals.

Severity: Calling Dougherty County a hotspot isn’t just a turn of phrase or a designation that only applies within the state of Georgia. The situation in Albany is comparable to other global hotspots. When we look at the number of COVID-19 infections per 100,000 people, the results are startling. In Dougherty County there are 1,400 coronavirus cases per 100,000 people, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. In New York City there are 1,308 infections per 100,000 people, according to the New York Times.

While Dougherty County has had nowhere near the number of cases or the number of deaths as New York City, the spread of the virus throughout the county is dangerously high. For comparison — Fulton County which is Georgia’s largest county and houses within its borders the city of Atlanta — has a case rate of just 169 per 100,000 people. Fulton County has also had fewer deaths than Dougherty County.

The Numbers: So what do the numbers look like in Dougherty County? As of noon April 15, there were 1,308 confirmed cases in Dougherty County and 83 people had died. Dougherty leads Georgia in number of deaths from coronavirus. Fulton County has 1,844 cases, which is more than Dougherty, but it has 62 deaths. The next highest number of deaths is in Cobb County, which has 43 deaths.

Statewide, Georgia has 14,987 confirmed cases and 552 deaths.

Cases, per capita, with the caveat that this depends on testing, which varies widely:

Since you asked.

There are two questions here. One is can he be fired, demoted or otherwise disciplined for this. It doesn't look like this has happened in any way shape or form. It doesn't even look like the dean has told him to stop using the word. Indeed, the Dean Mnookin even said he had the "right" to use the word in the way he used it.

The question presented, the only question that seems at issue here, is the "AITA" question. Yes, he is the asshole. It's easy enough to avoid using the word, and I think doing so highlights the charged nature of the word (much more charged than the "Fuck" in "Fuck the Draft" - these are very different words). This has nothing the fuck to do with anyone swearing, this has to do with racial bigotry and abuse, and anyone who doesn't get that is a fucking moron. Comparing the two, as E.V. does in his little article, is totally irrelevant, they have absolutely zero to do with each other. So, he's not just the asshole in this case, he's the moronic asshole who not seems to conflate the idea of an "AITA" question with some kind of question of right but also seems to conflate the idea of a garden variety slur with a statement of racial bigotry and prejudice. I know you worship at the alter of E.V., but this is not his finest hour in any sense of the phrase.

I admire Jennifer's restraint in not explicitly saying, "I'm sorry he's such an asshole"; I suspect in private she may well have said, "Eugene, can you just try not to be such a dick."

Yes! Particularly if I get paid $37 a barrel. But I doubt Schwab will let me, although I am going to call and ask. If your broker will, though, I will go in with you.

I can't prove it, but like Louisiana, I think it is due to evangelical, Jesus freaks, who kept going to services. Relatedly, how come faith healers never go to hospitals?

I think she probably agrees with him, but had to work the political waters.

I think those two funerals RT mentioned kind of prove it. I'm betting they weren't presided over by a Lesbian minister preaching peace, love and understanding.

It's crazy. Of course we're about to see a rash of COVID19 from all the evies who took to the streets and the churches over the weekend, and it's going to tear through rural areas where they have been "opening up" like wildfire in a couple weeks. Totally predictable trainwreck. And yet... all these Repubs want to get on the train track and head into the tunnel... singing Hallelujah!

Lot of folks though that until they figured out they'd have to take delivery of oil no one wanted or had a place to put.

If I understand correctly, the crazy low price is only for oil deliverable in the very near term, and I don't have a place to put it.

By the way, have I mentioned how much I'm looking forward to the Republican Convention this year?

My understanding is that part of the state is predominantly African American and very poor. I don't think this is the same crowd that went to the state capitols at the behest of the DeVos family.

Don’t forget the Hasidim in NYC holding funerals and weddings in the throes of the worst increase.

All brought you you by... Organized Religion!

I wonder if Catholicism has relaxed the rule against masturbation for those confined alone?

Does a deathbed confession regarding that hitchhiker you killed in 1976 given via Zoom get you into the pearly gates?

I poked around and you're right, it's like a Greek tragedy and the victims are overwhelming African Americans. One of the funerals stayed within social distancing guidelines, only five attendees, but some people came separately by car and sat at a distance and there was still enough mixing to spread.
