Yeah, and now weirdly quiet in the morning.

Very quiet. Last night was so different from Friday. I promised my family I would stay up to monitor the street as much as possible so they could sleep. Catnapped on and off and kept an eye on the street and when there was no foot activity that I could see between 3:15 and 4:00 a.m., I went upstairs. Apparently martial law works? Lots of sketchy cars racing up and down the cross street in the middle of the night. Got reports from friends in Uptown and NE that displaced protesters and looters and whomever were pushed into their residential neighborhoods, and neighbors would start screaming at anyone who was in the street, and that seemed to work. Got some reports of attempted looting at the commercial nodes closest to me but that the attempts were disrupted by neighbors. But it is nice to not have the foul haze of burning buildings hanging in the air this morning.

It’s just surreal. You’re getting more actual shit than we are down here, where aside from the Friday night gas station fire, things are as quiet as expected, but I’m on night two of sitting on the patio with a baseball bat listening and smelling for trouble. Ana the shut is just starting in other cities.
Super thankful for neighbors, though, and the wife and I totally lost it telling Tiny she should go ask our (three years ago) Trump-sign having neighbors for help if she can’t fins us. Politics aside, they are caring people who love her (and the adult sons may not even share the stupid politics) but the idea she might need them to call the rest of her family for help, and that they’d gladly do it, is emotional. Especially when elsewhere we seem to be trying to start a shooting war over our disagreements.

YMMV depending on your friends, but most of mine tend to be center left or center right, at roughly a 75/25 split favoring left.
The people on the right all think Trump is going to lose. The people on the left think Trump is going to win.
The people on the right don't seem to care too much about him losing. The people on the left seem defeatist about him winning.
The polls indicate he will lose. But when I say that to my friends on the left, they dismiss it as though the polls aren't real.
I personally do not see how he can win, even if the economy comes back. I think a majority of the country is simply exhausted with division and constant craziness. (These same people, right and left, all express absolute annoyance with the constant bickering and battling that has characterized this Presidency.) Am I missing something?

Re: Objectively intelligent.
Just did a recon walk around downtown Portland. Graffiti everywhere; the federal court house is covered. Some of the "George Floyd/I can't breath" variety, but more variations on "fuck the police." Emergency response contractors very busy with broken glass and boarding up windows; stores that had just re-opened are generally closed again. More people than I've seen downtown in weeks, mostly just checking out the scene. Only a handful of protesters around at the moment, and nothing organized. Curfew in effect again at 8 tonight.

Elections. Cute.
Yes you are missing riots escalating, him declaring martial law and suspending the election. I mean either way he's supposed to be out of office on 1/20/21 but if he got his buddy Vlad to drop a nuke or two YMMV.

One Man's Rioter is Another Man's Freedom Fighter

Re: Objectively intelligent.
Floyd's family is having a protest here tomorrow. I'm really worried. We saw a convoy of state troopers coming into town yesterday. Houston has been relatively good. Few hundred arrests, someone trampled by a horse, but no use of tear gas or pepper spray or rubber bullets. There are going to be a shit ton of out-of-towners coming to start shit for tomorrow's rally, and then for the funeral on Monday. I'm about a mile and a half from downtown.

Yes. He hadn't been in Minneapolis for very long. He was very involved in his church here and is considered a community leader. There are a LOT of people who knew him well. Tomorrow's rally will be pretty big, I think. Local rappers and the family have put it together, and city leaders are involved. I may or may not go. My husband is reluctant as hell. We'll see what happens.
OTOH, this is our police chief. He's been awesome, at least on spec.
