Sometimes its awful, sometimes its seems kind of normal. And it is definitely not as awful as having to worry about whether the police will feel like they can kill me with impunity because of the color of my skin. But being on edge all of the time is enervating. The fires have mostly stopped (there was a car fire in the neighborhood a couple of nights ago). But when people are finding stashes of gasoline in alleys, and plateless cars full of sketchy fuckers race through the neighborhoods, and the helicopters never stop, and the National Guard is patrolling your neighborhood, it is hard to just exhale. On Sunday early evening, my daughter told me there was a hysterically upset woman on our corner. I went out and she had just been carjacked a block up in broad daylight, ripped from her car by her hair. My daughter is scared to go outside. There are people who have come here (from far and near) to try to create chaos, for all sorts of reasons. It seems like their efforts are dwindling, but everyone has a little bit of dread about the coming weekend. But my neighbors are all looking for each other, and I have had more offers than I can count from friends willing to take in my family if we need to get out of here (the evacuation bags remain packed), and we are all hoping for peaceful nights.
