[Serious Question]The NYT had that story about how it was a positive that Dean yelled atsoccer refs. did the NYT pile on about the yelling in Iowa? I actually read literature, and only pretend to keep up on news, i mean this as an honest question.[/Serious Question]

The UN imposed sanctions on SH because the entire populations of its constituent member nations believed he actually had WMD? I'm not even sure our universes are parallel anymore.
There were voices of doubt throughout the process. Remember the murder marchers? The traitors, etc.?

Fiction is indeed your specialty.
On your serious question, I don't know the answer on the NYT, but there was a wonderful interview of Walter Cronkite last night on NPR where he was practically cracking up over how the media had piled it on on the "I have a scream" speach.
I just don't think anyone could resist piling on here. It was one of those hanging curve balls.

Ty, you owe me the last 2 minutes of my life back

He's a tenured professor, so you're wrong about the job. His comments about Reagan and the fisc clearly refer to the deficits. Please recall that under Reagan, we ran big deficits, and it took much effort under Bush I and Clinton to pay them down. Or do you and sgtclub think, like Cheney, that deficits don't matter?
If you think the bitterness is from being out of power, you're being willfully obtuse.

Oh, ok. Sure. Because, god knows, tenured professors would never give up their intellectual pursuits for a juicy government appointment. Are you working on your stand-up routine?

1) His comment about Reagan is slanted and you know it.
2) Yes, I agree with that hearsay quote attributed to VP Cheney by the irrelevant former Treasury Secy O'Neil that "Reagan proved deficits don't matter" (further, that the IMF says they do, offers clear and definitive proof to me that they do not). What Reagan also proved, however, is that curtailing runaway government spending and cutting federal programs DOES matter, and neither this POTUS nor any of these assjacks trying to replace him seem to be doing or saying anything to suggest any intent to do this.

No way. Trippi was a master of the universe in this world. Several candidates would have killed to get him, but he went with the guy he thought he could make into the frontrunner. He just didn't realize that The Candidate wouldn't listen to him, was unbreakable (in the horse sense), and would always fly off the handle.

Case in point, Drudge is reporting that Bush intends to announce a large budget increase to the NEA.

This is an anti-inclusive diatribe. Do you realize that you are marginalizing 68% of the posts on this Board with this statement?

Sorry. posting jag. Remember that Bush, who is being roundly criticized for his spending (by me, even), got there by allowing one half of the Dem proposals for spending to get through.
One half.
They would have spent twice what he allowed, and then taxed the hell out of us.
Out of fairness.

Deficits only matter when they reach critical mass as a percentage of GDP. Based on the OBM director's testimony yesterday (at least it was on CSPAN last night), our current deficits as a percentage of GDP are not even close to historical levels. In fact, they are slightly above where they were running under Clinton and roughly the same as under Reagan. Of course, this never gets parsed out in the DEMs discussion. Rather, they just yell and scream about the gross number without any context for it.*
Ty, you and I agree that we don't like the deficits under this president, but for different reasons. My reason is that I HATE big government and wasteful spending. You don't like wasteful spending and you also believe that the deficits are harming the economy. I think this latter point is wrong, but no one knows for sure.
*Same logic for taxes, cuts in spending, etc.

SC, what do we do with the idea that no Repub admin in 75 years has shrunk government? That was very disturbing to me. Did it bother you the same way?
I agree that deficits only matter when you have no control over inflation and exchange rates. You can obviate a deficit in a second by popping inflation, or devaluing. Why not do those things? Make it more expensive to buy Jap and Kraut cars - make it less advantageous to hire Indian labor - make it less fun to make Nikes in the Phillipines - what's our downside there? Look at how fast we can kill a deficit, and, at the same time, reduce the rest of the world to dependance on our largesse. I don't think the rest of the world, or AG and Ty, realize how dependant they are on our nicety, and how fast we could fix our own problems by fucking them. I consider it a sign of weakness in Bush that he hasn't done this yet. I'm sure Cheney has suggested it.
