Last Minute Trips

I incorporate by reference my answer to the stupid things done for sex and love poll.

But since most answers to this poll run towards the sappy end, I'll pile on:

A couple of years ago my grandparents were making their annual spring trek from their house in Florida up to the ancestral homeland in the northern Mid-West, driving the Airstream as they had done for at least the 20 years prior. My grandfather had a heart attack in Terra Haute, Indiana. My mother (who had been driving with them) called me a little after 11 am, I was on a plane by 1, and got to Indiana by about 6 (layover in Cleveland, maybe?) and the hospital by about 6:45. His heart stopped for the last time at about 8:30. I was holding his hand. The doctor said she was surprised he had lasted the entire day, and it was as if he were waiting for me to get there.

I had no clothes except the suit I was wearing when I got the call, no toothbrush, etc.

Totally, completely worth it.
