I love your zealous defense of all things SUV. It warms my heart. Such a passion. And for such a cause!! You need to make a movie about it. Have Mel Gibson produce and direct.
Apropos of Mel, did anyone see his interview last night? What a nutcase. He's definitely been going to Zelda's parties...

That would really be a neat trick, since the case was before the 10th Circuit, not the SCOTUS.

I'm sorry. Let me change the subject to the stupidity of the copyright laws:
- Joyce's descendant is threatening to sue if any public recitations of Ulysses take place on Bloomsday. After all, his work is not yet in public domain (fucking copyright laws). Stephen Joyce, 70-something and living in Paris, "has made millions of pounds from the proceeds of copyright of Joyce’s work and from suing for its infringement." In 1991, Joyce's work did enter the public domain in Ireland until EU's laws (perhaps to come in line with the US) extended copyright from 50 to 70 years after the author's death. Which means you won't be able to read Ulysses in public until 2011. As a result, Stephen gets to decide on things like refusing "an Irish composer permission to use 18 words from Finnegans Wake because 'to put it politely and mildly, my wife and I don’t like your music'."

This same blog announces that its book group choice for April is 1982, Janine by Alasdair Gray. I don't know it, but if you're looking for a recommendation . . . . .

Well, you said that your earlier post was a comment on Easterboy's guesses. My only point was that at least one of Easterboy's guesses, specifically the second one ("Second, owners of SUVs, especially, may falsely believe their vehicles have superior handling or road-holding power."), might have some basis to it.
The subject line of this post is my no-longer secret name for the politics board.

Short notice travel?
Almost a week ago to the hour Thurgreed PM'd me. He had a gym available from 10-11 AM on Saturday- if I could make it we could play 1 on 1. By 10 PM I was landing at La Guardia.
Believe me the ticket was quite expensive, but I thought it would be worth it. We promised that it would just be "our secret" no one would brag here about who won or whatever, it was just for the love of the game.
Next Morning I get to the gym about 9:50, and there's good old Thurgreed. we realized we hadn't really talked about rules. there were so many things to hash out- possesion? take back? 2/3 or 1/2? To be honest, lots of them we argued about a little.
Finally we were down to last points: Thurgreed insisted we use a women's size ball! Don't ask me why, his hands were normal sized- sure they were the soft hands of someone who hasn't done much physical work- but still the smaller ball didn't make sense.
For my part, I argued that since we had met on a lawyer's board, a basket by a black guy should only count for .75 of the points a white guy gets. I told Thurgreed this would reflect the lingering prejudice that the man uses to keep his comp down. Really this was just a ploy, and I was willing to throw this in to get the normal size ball.
Well soon enough, he's telling me I need a helmet and I'm telling him his basketball-rap is "whack," and to be honest we're not getting anywhere. After a long time He says he's going to ignore me, and starts to leave! that's when I suggest, I'll give in on scoring if he gives in on ball size, and he agrees.
First play, he flies by me, and rises.......and clanks the ball off the rim- turns out he can't dunk the bigger ball anymore- the 1 inch would have made the difference. I grab the board and then.....12 kids and a coach get there. It was 11, they had the gym and kicked us out. Final score 0-0.
So no, it turns out it wasn't worth the cost of short notice travel.

No, no, we have to have the "fat people are gross" and "butterface" discussions at least 10 more times each before either "breast feeding until 2" or "SUV" comes up again.

They also don't know that the fatter the tires they put on their SUVs, the less the SUV is able to navigate heavy snow.
