We tried Dogmatix at our house. It just couldn't replace the warmth of a real dog. And the batteries kept burning out.

Actually I think you whiffed. What she was describing was basically the plot line of a softcore movie called "Amazon Warriors Catfight."" I think she had posted the cover of the source novel a few weeks back.

While you may be right on the movie thing, I would have to disagree with your characterization of it as a kindergarten class. A "whiff" is an apparent failure to catch some obsucre reference to a book, movie, etc. , and post instead a reply which is referent to a different book movie, etc. I was highly confident that Leagl was not discussing a group of little kids.
But thanks for playing. Indeed. Carry on.

You snooze, you lose...or at least overpay
I wanted to buy that $135 limited edition 2-volume gargantuan 25 pound The Complete Far Side collection around X-mas time when it was released, but I kept putting it off.
So when I finally got around to trying to buy it 2 weeks ago - much to my dismay - I found out it was already out of print and completely sold out.
However, thanks to ebay, I was still able to get a copy for $160.
Thanks, ebay.

I gave it to Mr Man as a Christmas gift. It is very cool. And very heavy. Nice to know there's a resale market for it...

Amazon had it on sale in November for about $90. It was weighed 16 pounds, and I thought that someone had sent me an OED instead.

That's basically how I feel as a White Sox fan. That's what happens when you're not even #1 in your own city...
It is sad.
And Vegas still has the White Sox from 7-1 to 10-1 to win the pennant, which is (a) ridiculous; and (b) taking all of the fun out of the futures bet I wanted to place.
Oddly enough, many books still have Boston favored to win the pennant.

If you could locate that house in Folsom, I'm sure you could find a copy or two lying around.

The never have decent odds for long-shots it seems. Every year during the first week of NFL season when I am in Vegas (it is a tradition to be there then), I think about placing a J-E-T-S long-shot bet on the Super Bowl and then I see the odds and go lose my money some other way. I wonder if they changed the oddsmaking on that after the year the bookies were killed by the Rams winning the Super Bowl (was the first year they were good and Vegas took a serious hit on those beginning of the season bets - even offered to pay people out on lower odds if they would take a buyout before the game was played).

a good read
I recommend the book on Saturday Night Live, Live From New York, by Tom Shales and the other guy. It's basically an oral history of the show, and about 97% of it is quotations from interviews with the cast, crew and hosts. A big book, but it reads fast, and there are some wonderful moments in it.
I will never think about Milton Berle the same way again.
