I don't expect every tiny icecream store to provide wifi, but if you're a good sized hotel charging even better-sized prices, can't you throw your visitors a bone and spread the joy of internet? You have a doorman to keep out the riffraff looking for a place to download porn--at least let your customers do something productive in your nice lobby for free.

I rarely, if ever, see nice, business-type hotels providing free WiFi. The ones that do it for free are usually the mid-market types, like Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, etc. I usually get charged $8-10 at nicer hotels, and then you usually have to put in your room number and sometimes your last name. YMMV, of course.
Generally, though, I have had much better luck recently at finding open networks to mooch off of. There are a lot of places I frequent all over Chicago where you can get reliable, fast anonymous WiFi. There are even several Starbucks where you can get a free network from some act in the neighborhood and not use theirs. Hopefully, I'm not getting sniffed.

Nice stance for a lawyer -- "if no one is going to find out my advice is total crap for x period of time, it doesn't matter that I advised the client to do something illegal."
I wasn't saying that she needs to do it today or tomorrow, just that it needs to get corrected. JEEEEEZUS.

Increasingly, I understand, hotels are acknowledging that free broadband or WiFi access is expected as one of the standard amenities, like sheets and toilet paper. I, too, have found that the mid-market hotels are the ones that provide standard services and don't come up with bizarre new ways to charge you.
Of course, I've stayed at hotels that charge a "laundry fee" if you choose not to reuse your towels during your stay, so god knows what the industry will come up with next. An "electricity fee" if you stay up late reading?

Perhaps I don't understand the technology, but what difference does it make if Starbucks detected or "sniffed" you using someone elses WiFi connection?

Too late, I've already been hit with this one. About a year after the rolling blackouts in California, I stayed at the Wyndham Peaks resort in Telluride sometime in August. The hotel charged an energy surcharge of something like $10.00 per room. We're in the natural gas business and knew full well what we were getting paid for natural gas at the time and the market was very low and there was no justification for the surcharge. It was just another way for them to rip people off.
Incidentally, I would never recommend the Wyndham Peaks in Telluride. It was very hot in August with no airconditioning, so find some other place to stay in Telluride.

I fail to see how smoking dope from a handmade vegetable bong is significantly less gross than shoving yoga equipment up your nose, but I agree that this neti stuff does sound like a gateway to enema abuse.

Ask Charlize:
I've smoked dope from a carrot; it was sort of a novelty thing, I guess. I've used a lot more coke cans in my time.

It's not them I'm worried about. They've got a T-Mobile network that (I think) operates without encryption but which I trust. And if my blackberry were hacked (not really as much of an issue, as I don't think that it puts anything on the network), there wouldn't be any naked pics of me on there; Abba already deleted all the ones of me cornholing her.
But, wireless networking is relatively insecure if (a) you're not using any encryption or (b) you don't trust the network you are
using.
In the case of (a), anybody can intercept traffic to or from you and, without too much additional work, see exactly what you are
sending and receiving, like passwords, credit card numbers, etc. This is called "sniffing" or "packet sniffing."
In the case of (b), they could simply make illegitimate use of the stuff that is passing through their network instead of simply passing it upstream or downstream. This might be considered sniffing, too, I'm just a layman.
That reminds me, did they ever figure out how Paris and Fred got hacked? Couldn't it have been standard Bluetooth hacking?

Holy crap. I still have no clue what she is doing. How bizarre.
I've only used a coke can once or twice - there was a really good head shop in town, so everyone had proper equipment.

The only time I ever smoked out of an apple was in Mexico. Crazy people I met there actually carried pot across the border (because I'm sure it would have been so tough to obtain some down there), but for obvious reasons didn't bring a bong or pipe. Fruity goodness.
Note: my DEA career ambitions are down the tubes if y'all ever rat me out on this one.

She's smoking dope through an apple. You hollow out a bowl area and then a horizontal shaft meeting it. The smoke is relatively moist and tasty if the apple is fresh or cold or has been in water recently. I've done that a few times; it's easier than a carrot and probably healthier (in the grand scheme of things) that using a metal can with paint on it. I've definitely felt lightheaded and generally sick after smoking from a coke can.
I've think that I've always heard the sawed-off bottle setup referred to as a "gravity bong." I don't really see the role that gravity plays, but whatever. I have always just placed the bowl in the bottle with the mouth near the surface, pulled up to near-removal from water while holding flame, and then removed bowl, placed mouth and quickly pushed bottle down to force smoke out while exhaling. It works just as well with a sink, but a large bottle is good. A bit of a pain in the ass, especially in finding a good bowl to fit in the bottle mouth, but very efficient and it's always gotten me very, very high.

Actually, a couple of web security guys hung out by the red carpet at the Oscars and hacked (but didn't access) about 100 cellphones carried by the Hollywood great and good. "Just to make a point," they said, though the person standing next to them might have been doing it maliciously. Apparently, no one even raised an eyebrow as they stood there, 15 feet away, and hacked away.
Good press for their security co., at least, I hope they see some business from it.

We called those "gravity bongs," which made no sense at all. Bathtub bong or bucket bong is much better. Nothin' like being force-fed 2 liters of smoke.

I think your DEA dreams may also be dashed now. Or maybe the coke posts a few weeks ago already did the trick.
