Selective Service: Aloha is right. A LS friend had to pay tuition in cash b/c he had refused to register in the mid-80s and was ineligible for all student loan programs. There was no amnesty; his age at the time (early 30s) was such that he couldn't register anymore. I don't know if he also forfeited social security and Medicare, but it struck me as a very expensive form of protest.

Hummers: Spotted on an H2 license plate at a grocery store the S.F. Bay Area: "YDOUCARE" (can't figure out how they got it to fit). I wanted to take a baseball bat to all the windows.

Minis: It's a $16K car that gets 28/37 mpg and looks good doing it. What's the downside, again? The fact that Sebby thinks I'll be a tool for driving one? The DisAd is non-unique.

It doesn't look good doing it. IMO. And Sebby is not the only one who will think you are a tool for driving one, though I have to admit that the combined force of paigow, raouaouaoal and me is not one to be reckoned with.

The draft won't be a problem for me. I will avoid the draft because I am also openly old. Shhhhh! Don't tell my SO.

Reinstituting the Draft

This may be way late, but I believe there are a number of federal benefits (employment within, mostly), and perhaps student loans, that are not available if you failed to register. And you can't go back and fix it after you turn 25 (or whatever the cutoff age is).

BRC (I think): Registering for the draft is independent of the draft itself. You have to register at 18 if male, just so they have a list of names if an actual draft needs to be held.

I'm not sure if anybody else has this reaction, but whenever sebby starts railing against something, it makes me want to go out and acquire whatever he hates. I think that's how I ended up with 2 siamese cats (too bad they were strays -- if I'd known how he feels about strays, I would have made sure I paid a lot of money to a breeder for them). I also want to drink lots of single malt scotch and wear underwear every day. I used to want to get plastic surgery, but since he did an about-face on that issue, now I hate the idea of plastic surgery. I even kind of want to go out and buy a Starship cd now and rock out to "We Built This City."

And I definitely want to go buy a Mini after today's discussion. Too bad I already own an SUV (but at least he hates those too, whew!).

I think the new theme for my life could be "Do the opposite of what Sebby says to do." It worked for George Costanza!

I'm going to go and really care about my job now. Toodles!

You may have to make exceptions. Who wants a dirty ass?

That is what I thought I remembered, but I didn't really ... remember.

In other news, this was in Crain's and I just had to post it here:

http://www.crainsny.com/article.cms?articleId=20906&a=f

[White Manhattanites are overwhelmingly thinner than Americans generally or even other city residents. So far as I can tell, this is blamed on fashionistas. "I wish we could find out the reason why and bottle it," says Dr. Thomas Frieden, the city's health commissioner. Uh, that would be "vanity," Tom. However, they do amusingly concur with one of my longstanding observations: New Yorkers are about the most unthinking conformists I've ever seen.]

As a thin white Manhattanite with several tattoos and a pierced navel, I strenuously object to the "unthinking conformist" label. I have done a fair amount of thinking about it. (mostly after the fact, tattoo-wise).

so do navel rings come out and go back in? or will I have to scratch my main red thong* lady contender off the list?

*I know, I know, not a thong.

I'm waiting for the Law & Order episode.

P.S. If gas prices keep climbing, Mini drivers are going to look pretty smart at 28/37 mpg. If they start making them with a force field to keep SUVs from driving over them, I'd get one. I thought about getting a Vespa for doing "in town" errands but decided that the savings for the 2 days a year without 3 feet of snow wouldn't be worth it.

Prince Alberts do and he was in the navy, so I believe the answer is yes.

This one is simple. They have better blow. How hard was that to figure out?

I didn't notice any tattoos, either, but it's been a really long time since I saw the picture. Perhaps it could be reposted?
