I think giving them as a gift is creepy. I think that they are a little bit creepy in general, but moreso as a gift. Maybe it's not as big of a deal in the marriage context, when it's kind of an "our money" concept where they make decisions about large expenditures together, hopefully, but it's still creepy. Her comments about showing them off at Christmas parties plays into it, too. It's just a feeling, I guess.

eta I don't know why you don't think that an offensive reaction to domestic abuse wouldn't offend me. How many people see shit like that on TV and adopt the moral attitude of the TV producers as their own? I mean, really, if TAR doesn't end up addressing the domestic abuse or violence going on in that relationship, how many people out there are going to get a hint that that kind of behaviour is an acceptable way for people to treat each other in a relationship?

I wouldn't know where to buy them. I haven't seen them in the stores. Then how do you wrap them? Or do you just drop them in her stocking? Do you have to keep them away from pine needles? What if you got the wrong size? I suppose you could include a gift receipt, but it's always more satisfying if someone can enjoy their gifts on xmas day.

you are so cute when you get up on your moral high horse. okay, not really. it is relatively clear to me that the producers of TAR are going to make as big of an example of Jonathon as they possibly can.* why do you think its been edited the way it has to this point? you really think anyone watching would emulate him and his relationship style? have you been watching the same show that I have? or do you believe that Jane and Joe Flyoverland in Melverne are really that stupid?

*the more interesting question, which has already been asked here I believe, is what responsibility should they have for casting that fuckup in the first place.

Dammit. Now I find out that I already work for you. This is a shitty Christmas. But at least now I know what you really do with your time and that the suspected ass-scratching is really actual ass-scratching. Thanks for not buying us gifts again this year. Dragging them all the way home would be such a bitch. You're always thinking of us.

Its fine to shoot the shit about reality tv, but getting bent about such a show - or even providing in-depth moral analysis of such a show - is like pitching a fit because your McRib is overcooked.

Even if they do make an example of him, the fact that all this shit has been portrayed as normal for several shows now is kind of over the top. To answer your questions:

To make more money and for better ratings.

Yes, I think a lot of people get a lot of cues for appropriate behaviour from tv.

Yes, I think so.

I think that the populace is pretty stupid, regardless of where they live. I have no idea whether redstaters are more like to engage in domestic violence than bluestaters.

They should receive moral indignation. They've got mine. And Phil is nowhere near as cool as Anderson Cooper. I can't turn away, though. This and the occasional CSI: Chicago are all I watch on CBS anyway.

It hasn't been portrayed as normal. That's my point.

[and I'm out.]

Well, think of the kids. I know it's not a kids' show, but when kids see that kind of behavior, aren't they more likely to emulate? I mean, to see him winning week after week and to see her not really standing up for herself and saying stupid shit like "he gets mad when I do stupid things, he's really a nice guy most of the time" won't that be confusing to them?
Sorry, didn't mean to get all preachy, but my best friend works in a domestic violence office and when kids see this behavior from the male in the family, they're more likely to do the same thing. That's all I'm saying.

There are some gifts (vacations, real estate, breasts) where wrapping is just impractical, and so usually you wrap up a substitute -- like a vacation brochure, the deed, maybe some new bras and a scalpel.

Now that we're back on the gift giving front, I'm still wondering exactly where one finds trannies? RT's suggestion was a bit far, and I'm afraid there don't seem to be a lot of trannies in the local classified.
