Yup, good ole Jane Russell. However, I note that, while "full figured" was long ago intended to mean "busty or hourglass" it's been co-opted by the "busty - and also hippy, wiggly, jiggly, etc." and now effectively means "fat."

"Curvy," which was the main replacement for "full figured," is going the same way, thanks in no small part to "Real Women Have Curves," a great movie but one in which the women didn't so much have curves as sphericalness. "Womanly" is up next.

I liked Real Women have Curves too, but at the same time it drives me bonkers that if you are not fat you are somehow "unreal." Not that I mind being imaginary because of all the magical benefits it provides, but still. Enough of this "real" crap.

I think the implication was more that the uncurvy are fake than that they are imaginary.

It's available online here.
I support the idea that health care is the government's responsibility. The Bush presidency will long be remembered as the first step toward making this country a third world one.

I don't know, fringey - there are a lot of fake women with curves out there. It's very misleading.

If the premise of Collapse (Jared Diamond; great book) is to be believed, his environmental policies are also taking us down that path.

agreed (see ANS) but really there was no otherworldliness in that movie, where there were ghosts or whatever of skinny women.

In other news, I had dreams about a guy I dated more than half my life ago (and never had sex with) all night and woke up from one of them coming. Nice start to the day -- much better than coming to work to discover that once again we are going to have the discussion of what, exactly, constitutes disgustingly fat.

I know. I was just being silly about the imaginary part.
I am glad you had a good dream.

No. Jane Russell was a calendar girl. She was not full figured until she was old. And fat. And did the bra commercials. When she was old. And fat.

No. In reality, I was alone, and nothing was hitting the place that might have resulted in that.

Can't we blame Jane Russell herself for that? Didn't she - in later years when less hourglassy and more round - tout those Playtex 18-hour monster bras for "full figured gals"? Took any allure right out of the phrase right there.

Hate that "real women" terminology - seems to imply not only what gwnc and ltl/fb said, but also that that is what you should now aspire to.

And I say that as a fake woman with apparently exceedingly minor curves.
