Luke is a joke. The guy is below average in every aspect of the game.
What is amazing about this series is that Phil Jackson has failed to make an adjustment of any kind whatsoever to the thumping his team is taking. (On second thought, that isn't amazing at all.)
It seems to me that if you concentrate all your defensive efforts on two guys on the Pistons (Hamilton and Billups), you'd be in every game. The problem is, Jackson thinks the big names he has on his team are immune from good defense and will "snap out of it," you know, like Jordan.
Pick and roll. San Antonio killed you with it for the first two games of an earlier playoff series. You seemed to adjust to that. What the fuck happened? Are you too stupid to make the adjustment again?
Payton has to go over the pick. Period. Top side. He needs to bump Billups and fight through. Create the space you need. Shaq (or whoever the guy is who is guarding the Piston setting the pick) needs to show on the other side of the pick. You can't jab step at the ball handler, especially when he knows you're not serious. Open shot every time. The problem is, the Lakers aren't a team that cares about defense. Jordan did and he made everyone else on his teams care about it too. (Btw, everyone needs to stop comparing Kobe to Michael, because it's stupid.)
The Lakers are lazy. Kobe can't guard any point guard straight up off the dribble. Payton has lost 2 1/2 steps, so he can't fight through those picks like he used to. Shaq thinks he's the best player the game has ever seen and that the ball should know that and just gravitate to his hands after a missed shot. Wallace and Sheed work for rebounds. Everyone else tries to get a hand on a rebound to tip it and try to keep it alive. And then the rest of the team hustles.
To no one's surprise, Larry Brown has thoroughly out coached Jackson. What was Jackson's brilliant play to get Kobe an open look to tie the game the other day? Inbound the ball to Shaq (?) and have him pass it to Kobe who will get a shot off without a pick. Translation: Give it to Kobe and get the fuck out of the way.
He had the same game plan going into last night's game as he had going into game 1. I forgot who from this board said what makes a good coach in the NBA today, but Phil sure was listening, because his strategy seems to be: Manage the delicate ego of the professional athletes on his team with his brilliant zen philosphy. Pathetic. Maybe after last night's loss he handed out another copy of "The Art of War."
I hope the Pistons win in five.

Confidential to Hank: Were you one of the fans outside the Lakers' hotel room the night before the game making noise to keep them up?

It's certainly possible, at this point. If it happens, is phil Jax's reputation as "best ever', etc. completely destroyed, to be replaced by "best timing ever" or something similar?

It's A Hell Of A Town
I'm not trying to rub it in or anything, but I bet all you small-town folks out there didn't get a chain e-mail terrorist attack warning forwarded to you today, like I did (reproduced below). 9/11, 3/11, 6/11 -- I'll think twice before stopping for a Slurpee from now on, that's for sure. Oh, and "obviously Reagan's death wasn't planned"??? How gullible can some people be?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all I hope everyone is doing well. The reason I am sending out this mass email to everyone is because of something that was brought to my attention the other day that I feel I need to tell as many people as possible incase it turns out to be true.. One of my colleagues has a good family friend who works in city hall. This friend called my coworker on Friday to tell him about some intelligence the city has gotten regarding a possible terror
attack in the city (most likely the subways) planned for this Friday and urged him to avoid the subways if possible. He also told him something about the city placing an order for 2 to 3 thousand extra body bags. Now you have to take these things with a grain of salt because I am sure they get tons of this intelligence that turns out to be nothing. However there are some things that co inside with this Friday that seem to give it a higher probability than usual. The terrorists attacked the WTC on 9/11. They
attacked Spain's subways on 3/11. This Friday just happens to be 6/11. Whether that means anything or not who knows. The thing that really has me concerned however is that all of a sudden a lot of things are now closed on Friday due to Reagan's death. The stock market, banks, Mail and all federal buildings are closed. Obviously Reagan's death wasn't planned but the fact they chose Friday as the day to do this big honoring of him strikes me as a
little to coincidental (less people going to work = less people on the subway). The question that I get most when I tell people about this is why wouldn't they go on TV and warn people. Well I think the answer to that is simple....they can't. They would cause mass hysteria and the city would be out of control. Take this information and do with it what you want. I just felt the need to tell as many people as I could. God forbid something does happen this Friday and some people get hurt or die that I know and could have warned about it and didn't, well that would be a tough pill for me to swallow. I hope all this is bullshit and nothing happens this Friday or any day for that matter. One thing is for certain though if I have to work on Friday I am taking a cab.

One thing that has always baffled me is how Steely Dan fans insist on describing Steely Dan's lyrics as "subversive," when I always thought a better adjective was "clever."

"Subversive"? I think that that is the code for including a bit of humor and snark in lyrics. Or maybe the way they brought jazz influences into rock.
I like them a lot (although I never called them subversive, I used to call them geniuses -- but now I reserve that title for people like Albert Einstein and Paul Wolfowitz). But, since sebby dislikes them, you all already knew that, right?
And I'm never going back to my old school.

That's it. I'm definitely NOT going in the Dallas subways today. Thanks for the warning.

I was there so didn't see the game on TV. I really was hoping Bill was shown with his smug smile wiped off as his son fucked up. Bill just did a live chat on espn.com. I posted the question:
I think the only Laker with energy is Luke, and I would try and get him more touches/shots. thoughts?
He didn't answer it

No, but that was pretty funny. They filled up the upper level of a parking deck so they could get noise up to the Laker's floor. 6th man.
Saturday I have the room next to Malone reserved. I told Spook's mom she can work from it. That'll keep them up.

my first 45 was Hey Nineteen. the only huge raves I've heard over their music have to do with complicated song structure and very good sound quality. I sort of think of them as non-offensive background music. and 70's but not in a way that is as painful to hear now as, say, Christopher Cross.

I saw no representations as to the quality of the grammar and spelling. Therefore, this timmy gives it a pass. I think whoever wrote that should realize, however, that if the content of the message is truly important, presenting it ungramatically and with numerous spelling errors is going to cause a lot of people to disregard the message as ignorant bullshit.
ETA I went back and read it and it was not that bad, considering it is an informal email.

Kimmel show pulled due to concern for Hank
Quote:
Kimmel was talking to ABC sportscaster Mike Tirico during halftime of Tuesday's game when he said, "They're going to burn the city of Detroit down if the Pistons win, and it's not worth it." Tirico, an Ann Arbor resident, immediately objected, telling him to be careful about making fun of Detroit.

No, I think that TV execs have lost any semblance of balls.

Presidential Motorcade
I just went out and stood in the rain for a half and hour to watch Regan's motorcade go by. There were two hearses. THe first one had a lower back door/bigger window and their was a flag draped over it. It was followed by a limo. There was a van in front of them that was taping. Several more cars in the procession and then there was another hearse with a smaller back window/higher door, so you couldn't see the coffin because of the height of hte door. THat was followed by a limo also. Do you think Reagan was in the first or the second?
