Was it Fox News or MSNBC that had its person reporting from Aruba on the hurricane because she was on location for her big Nathalie Holloway piece and they didn't bother getting another anchor to cover their actual important news in the headquarters? Some awful woman with a raspy voice. We couldn't fathom who ever hired her with that voice to be an anchorperson. Grating.

ETA - same night, Fox News (I think) had the guy from Scarborough County/Country or whatever that show is called (I guess he must be Scarborough) doing the hurricane coverage. What the hell? where are all of the actual newspeople these days? I mean besides John Stewart.

Here's the thing that pisses me off about that mentality. There's a way out of being the "poor, uneducated underclass" in this country. Anyone can join the armed forces and bootstrap their way to a better life. And yes, I say this as the soon-to-be ex-wife of a US Army officer.

I think that a lot of the "poor, uneducated underclass" thinks they are entitled to a hell of a lot. And that sense of entitlement bewilders me.
I am getting the sense that you feel that the people who didn't have cars in which to evacuate were just too stupid to evacuate. You are truly charming (and whiffalicious, in your response to SS's post about people greeting the helicopters with open arms etc. etc.) this evening. Almost as much so as night before last.

Hey,

I am making my donations. I just sent some money to Preservation Hall, which fully goes to financially support the musicans. http://www.preservationhall.com/2.0/

Now, I am going to make a big ole red cross donation. My firm is matching my funds so I wante to see if Lawtalkres has hit Five Hundred yet? I would rather maximize my donations, but if we havent hit the level here yet, maybe I will split my donation.

I think LT is at $700-something. RT posted it in the Welcome thread (the post also shows up on the LT homepage).

Are you going to make a donation to an animal charity as well? I know you are into that sort of thing (and the scale of lost/homeless pets in LA and MS is mindboggling I'm sure). I posted a link to a good one the other day. www.noahswish.org

I was not bitchy. I was condescending. And blame bnb -- it stems from her inanity.

Thanks for that. I will. My sister just sent me a pic of some guy dragging his dog around in a garbage can. I would like to send THAT guy some money directly.

I don't really know very much about you, but I would presume that you are human enough to have at least some empathy for people in situations worse than yours. Even if they deserve where they are, or should have fled, or whatever else. If for no other reason than the fact that many other cities have large urban poor populations, and maybe this could affect you in some other way than you just hearing about it. It's not like, if the situation were right, mob violence couldn't happen in other places.

I'm certainly a big proponent of the whole personal responsibility thing. It's one of the few things I like about today's GOP: personal responsibility above all else (well, except for corporate welfare, but who's counting?). Certainly, the poor in America get a lot more done for them than in many other (mostly third world) countries, and often, they are to blame for their predicaments. There are ways out of/around lots of things: losing one's job, getting sick, having terrible medical bills, having a spouse die, etc. That doesn't mean that everyone is going to be able to find a reasonable way out.

However, I think about how I got to where I am, and I don't think that I would have gotten here had I been raised by parents without jobs, or with drug problems, or without much education. Frankly, I think that it's a pretty sad statement about our society that the best way out for a lot of people is to join the military.

I'm not really that idealistic. There will always be an underclass, and there will always be people who will never make their own lives better. At some level , sure, fuck them. At some point, though, having this many uneducated people, poor people, incarcerated people, etc., starts to weigh on the ability of our country to be productive and lead the world and all that shit.
