Crack, the other white meat?

This relates to a conversation I just had with another associate in the office. Without implicating yourself, how many people do you know who have smoked crack either during law school or during the years they are practicing law?

THank you all. Please participate in my biased survey.

Oh, God, yes. We're talking about a totally outrageous paradigm.

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

Len Bias injested an enormous amount of blow and is also thought to have had an unknown heart condition similar to Dereck Coleman and Olojuwan, wherein the heart occasionally erupts into arrythmia during exercise.

PS: To the ass who stole the 7 foot poster of Bias palming a balll in fron of a scoreboard which read "I'm Bias" from my door in my senior year apartment, I'll see you in hell.

I stole your poster Sebby. YOu can pick it up next time you're in town.

Not too many. I know more who have taken LSD than who have smoked crack, but this may be due to the circles in which I run.

Where is this silent majority? It's frightening that they refuse to stand up to bullshit like this, and instead support even MADD and lower BAC levels, while travelling salesman dad gets loaded nightly in an airport fuddruckers.

Close, but no cigar. I searched for mine, but couldn't even find it on Ebay.

Crack is a "professional" user's drug. I know a few people who smoked cocaine and one who even shot it, but crack is for, well... you've seen Chappelle's Show, right?

LSD is a happy experimental, self-exploration lets'have-40-beers-and-throw-the-disc-and-listen-to-Eat-A-Peach drug. Crack is when life just ain't worth it, but you're too self-absorbed to blow your brains out.

It would seem that supporting MADD and getting whacked in an airport bar while waiting for a plane are not mutually exclusive. But I hear you.

I've never known anyone who admitted to smoking crack. And I've known some fairly serious drug users. I know plenty who dropped acid in college.

I know people who admitted to smoking crack but were actually really embarrassed about it. Not about drug use in general, but about the crack use because it's so whack.

No. Most lawyers I know stick with the classic depressants. And frankly, given the type-A asshole games that dominate this profession during office hours, their friends and family are probably better off that way.

Don't get me wrong, I am not pro-crack. But, I sometimes think that crack has, relatively-speaking, gotten bad rap. It has been portrayed as this drug that can get you addicted if even think about smoking it. But, there are actually a fair number of people who are able to smoke the drug and maintain relativly normal lives. Is crack any worse than meth, or heroin, or oxycontin in terms of how likely it is to derail an otherwise normal life?

No. The people I know were embarrassed about it because it meant they couldn't afford the better, cleaner stuff.

Again, you're talking pro-level drugs. These drugs imply that the standard issue recreational drugs (acid, schrroms, pot, coke) no longer "get yu where you need to be." Its like ordering a 12 oz glass of vodka neat at a company happy hour. Its "maintenance level", and that isn't sending the proper feel-good message to those around you. Those sort of people usually need antidepressants and therapy.

Assuming you do coke, any chance you've got an unknown heart condition?

I recently found out that my sibling has had some not insignificant arrhythmia (you would think this would have been something to share immediately, but apparently no, it's better to wait a few years). Perhaps I will lay off the coke, in case it's genetic.
