another re line for sb
It's taking forever to load, but the American Society of Magazine Editors just picked their top 40 magazine covers from the last 40 years. John and Yoko came in first, Demi Moore's first Vanity Fair shot (sans paint, with kid in utero) came in second.
I really like the camel humping Economist cover.
There's also a powerpoint presentation of the winners here.

Two things work against this:
A) Relatively speaking, you are a piker in terms of knowing futility. It's been what, only 35 years or so? Amateur.
B) In normal circumstances, I'm more an American League guy, even though they don't play the game the way it's "supposed" to be played.

I am rooting for the White Sox. To the extent that I root for anyone at all. 4 reasons:
1. They are one of the original teams in baseball, so it is unlikely they will ever be forced into teal and mauve uniforms after some fit by the league that all the team uniforms are overly similar.
2. Their curse is a more compelling story that the curse of the Bambino ever was in my book.
3. I have yet to meet an annoying White Sox fan. I don't doubt that there are some, but clearly not in the quantities of annoying Yankees and/or Red Sox fans. Heck, Chicagians don't even rank in the top 3 for grating accents, so they start out at a annoying scale disadvantage.
4. Coltrane. When the White Sox are winning, I think of Coltrane, Sequels and Coltrane's frat boy friends out on the town, drinking some beer, watching some ball. I like to envision one of my fake internet friends happily watching the game that tends under most circumstances to bore me to tears.
So, for the next week and a half, I'm a White Sox fan. And I'd prefer that they win the thing in 4 games, so that I can return to watching reality tv and the NFL in peace. Thank you.

No. I don't. I could list the starting line-up of the 1986 NY Mets, and at some point in the late 1970s or early 1980s, I was a huge Tug McGraw fan, but that is about the extent of my baseball pedigree (I play a mean game of moundball).
Did the White Sox wear mauve and/or teal uniforms at some point in the past? If so, I may have to reconsider my allegiance for the next 10 days.

But clearly, they're in the top 5, wouldn't you say?

Actually I originally had "not even in the top 5..." and I changed it to top 3, because I was concerned I might lose my audience with that claim. I have been told not to make any remarks about the accents or lack thereof in that region of the country. But I sorta think they are cute.

They actually wore shorts in the '70s.

The accent is annoying. And the South Side isn't the classiest place in the world. It's not scary like people make it out to be, but the only time I go down there is for ballgames. I'm a 3rd generation Sox fan, and I wasn't raised anywhere near the South Side. Most White Sox fans probably think I'm a Cubs fan until I start screaming.

Thanks. Sequels and most of my friends are, unfortunately, Cubs fans. It will be a mixed marriage.* Worked for my parents though (Sox/Indians). Luckily, I have 2 good friends who are diehard Sox fans. That's enough.
*If we have a son, and he becomes a Cubs fan, I will make him wear a dress for the rest of his life.

You would be amazed at how close the "Bill Swerski's Superfans" sketch from SNL is to the true South Side accent. The sketch really doesn't exaggerate that much.

I think they traded their pants to the Philly Flyers.
FWIW, the ChiSox version during the '86 Mets reign wasn't so great either:
