Risking being accused of not buying CDs in the last 10 years (Sebby, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot came out in April 2002, not 2001), I'd add Pavement's Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain to the list of albums that base modern (indy rock) music.

The bands you list, str8 are all the hot darlings of the indie world that I read about on a lot of websites. I dont always go for that, especially if its all hyped- its all so Frankie, though I admittedly jhavent heard most of it. I only heard the Radiohead album with Creep on it and I returned the album bc I thought it boring. I would need to hear some of these bands you mention before buying them. Is ther a channel for this on my satellite music cable thing?
Soundgraden is great. We've been down this road - I agree Burden in My Hand is one of the best tunes of the past decade.

Kid Rock... tough one. He can be utterly awful, but also amusing. But his shit won't last - its too contrived. I really don't have an opinion there.

Offspring... again, I just don't know their shit too well. I won't deign to judge a band based on their radio stuff. I'll give them this - they're catchy as hell.

As to you comment on Str8's taste, you're dead right. I t sounds like he doesn't shoose music he actually likes, but instead buys - and recommends - stuff he reads about in Spin. Its a shortcoming, but he probably gets that from his job. My buddies in LA who work in that biz have awful taste in music because their only recommendations are product pitched to them by other people in the biz. I have about five emails from those guys telli g me the Bondies and the Darkness are the next big thing.

I have seen video of the Darkness live. They REALLY suck. The Bondies' record has some moments, but it reminds me of the Cult's crappy "Sonic Temple" cd from 1988.

Radiohead is like U2. They're the mass-accesible critics' darling. They're really just a Beatles/Floyd ripoff with heavier guitar and, believe it or not, lyrics more sophomoric than Roger Waters' crap. Take the sloppy nonsense rambling of The Wall and put it against the angst ridden 8th grade poetry of OK Ciomputer and you'll see no difference. But the music is fantastic, so they get props. Saying Radiohead is talaneted is like yelling "Damn, do you know how good a car Mercedes is???"

As for Radiohead, that creep album was slow and boring as I recall it. are the rest of these albums like that bc if they are, no. I like to rock out. YOu know I love my Crowes, my RHCP (though not as much recently), Janes, Soundgarden, and the Dead. I have never been into euroey, new wave shit, and I eschew anything that sounds like it was made with synthesizers. Guitars and drums. Like that Dave Chappelle skit- White People Dancing.
Noone has an opinion on the new Courtney Love or Blondie, huh? What about a band by the name of the Mojo Gurus? They have a record called Hot Damn. I may buy it on that title alone. How about the Shins?

I have never liked U2 . Well, I liked that song Two Hearts Beat As One and I think I own Zooropa on someone's suggestion. But, no.

And just this weekend I thought to myself, my these mercedes are starting to look really pimped out and tacky. Is this the effect Chrysler has had on them? So maybe thats an appropriate analogy. But if you say they are amazxing, maybe I will rethink/.

And I like Offspring's catchiness. Self Esteem is one of my all time favorite tunes actually I like to listen to that album witha buzz on.

I, too, was guilty of drinking and dialing. The SO was not thrilled. Thankfully, my other charms more than compensate for that momentary lapse in judgment.

Bondies SUCK. They sound like Glenn Danzig or the Cult sped up. Don't agree? Find me a good review anywhere. They blew ass at SXSW - embarrassing crap.

Yankee Foxtrot? Yeh, its good. Its also very old news. Did you stop buying cds three years ago?

Franz Ferdinand is allright, but its gimicky new wave punk. The Libertines kick the shit out of it.

The Darkness?? You can't be fucking serious. Why not buy Tencious D? "What's wrong with being sexy?" If you take that band as anything more than product, you're too high to be posting. That cd will be a coaster in three months. They're a record insudtry pump and dump scam.

Oh, and as to Radiohead, do you assume Paigow has been in a cave on Mars for the last four years? I don't think I know anyone who doesn't own the three discs you list.
I got the Von Bondies and your darling Libertines at about the same time. I've listened to the Von Bondies album about 12 times. I've managed to slog my way through the Libertines twice.

As far as the Darkness goes, I think some of their songs rock out (Love on the rocks with no ice), others not so much. But they're incredibly popular (you should see what the markup on their concert tickets is on eBay), recently won a major UK music prize, and on that basis alone are worth knowing about.

But damn, it's not like I suggested she go buy the new Tortoise CD (out this week) or Godspeed You Black Emperor or something.

Given PP's clarification on her tastes though, maybe she's right to follow your lead. I still think you both would like Modest Mouse though. And perhaps the Shins, if you're willing to give something a little more pop-ish a try by going down chutes too narrow.

ETA: I guess this answers your question Paigow. The Shins are definitely worth checking out.

ACL Update

Speaking of music, the Austin City Limits Festival site has a link to enter to win a trip to Austin for the festival on September 17-19. http://www.aclfest.com/home.html The line up hasn't been announced yet.

That makes two of us. Joshua Tree was ok, and Pride is a great tune, but Bono is a ham, and they can't do political lyrics for shit. They're always preachy and overwrought. If you want to make a political point, you don't come right out with some cornball sentiment like "Shots rang out in the morniong sky... they took your life, but they could not take your pride." Fuck, if I were MLK, I'd be rolling in my grave saying "Hey, Irish motherfucker, stop crying in your Giunness for me... What I did is way too important to be memorialized with hallmark lyrics which will be sung by drunken 15 year olds on senior week at the Jersey Shore."

Maggie's Farm - that's how you write political songs.

I certainly hope U2 never find what they're looking for, because if they do, it'll be on the radio for the rest of our lives.

Do flight attendants still give the schpeil? On American they play the video. In english and in spanish. I'm learning spanish this way. So far I know seatbelt and floatation device. I'm sure it will come in handy at some point.

I buy a lot of music on the strength of good reviews. There are certain reviewers who I trust completely and if they like something, I know I'll like it too. I also buy a lot of music that I hear on KCRW (California public radio giant) and Nic Harcourt's show Morning Becomes Eclectic. They've broken more cool bands than you'll ever know. For me it's the best system to discover new music that I can think of -- I just don't have time to go to clubs in LA listening to bands on spec.

The rest of the new stuff I buy is hip-hop I hear on Power 106 (Big Boy!!). And the rest of my music purchases are new releases from established bands I like, or realizing that I have a gap in my musical knowledge and rushing to fill it out -- like when I bought a bunch of Emmy Lou Harris CDs last month. Bottom line is that I buy a LOT of music, and none of it is a result of stuff being "pitched to me by people in the biz," unless you call what I've described above as such a pitching.

Hmmmm. So many negatives in that sentence. Does "It is not my job to not fuck them" mean the same as "it is my job to fuck them"? That would make me a whore I think.

Others have already suggested Wilco and the Jayhawks.

Sounds like singer-songwriter stuff is up your alley. None of these are "new" but If you haven't already tried them, they'll be new to you, right?

Of the top of my head, I'd suggest Lucinda Williams (Car Wheels on a Gravel Road), Lyle Lovett (I'd go with Live in Texas or Joshua Judges Ruth), Robert Earl Keen (my personal favorite is West Textures), or the Nields (Gotta Get Over Greta, Play, and If You Lived Here You'd Be Home Now are their rockier works).

Your digital music thingy should have a channel for this type of stuff. Some call it AAA (I forget what this stands for), some call it singer-songwriter, some call it alt-country.
