The "secret handshake" or so I was once advised (and have since proven) is to say something along the lines of,

"Officer, I am really sorry, of all people, as a former prosecutor, I should know better".

The risk is related to what to do if yiou are not a former prosecutor. for ME it's lie, as that has to work better than the truth. And it does.

I have used this a few times and gotten out of tickets, even wiht state troopers. The inevitable follow up is usually, assuming I am close to home,

"King County?"

to which I reply, "No, New York, I lived out there at the time, but eventually couldn't take that ratrace, you know, fucking New Yorkers"

That invariably gets a knowing nod and a "Okay, let's try to be more careful out there Mr. Former Prosecutor".
