More than any other statement I've seen on this board, this warrants additional information. Most helpful would be comparisons of what was not your style with what is your style. TIA.

That would explain the royalty check.

We've been waiting to furnish our dining room. Now that that's done, we plan to use the formal china.

The stemware we registered for was considerably less expensive than that, but we do use it for nice dinners (holidays, dinner parties). I will also be imminently inheriting my grandmother's sterling (she's not dead yet, but moved into assisted living), and I expect that will also get regular use.
If you never have sit-down dinner parties, you can live without it. But I grew up in a household where the nice stuff was broken out for holidays, so that's how we do it around here.
For regular folks, the days are long past when you can register for and get a whole service of sterling. When I got married we duly registered for it, but didn't get a single piece.

At home, no matter the night of the week or what the occassion, I only drink wine out of lead crystal, Riedel Vinum Extreme for casual nights, Sommelier for special occassions. This said, if ty shows up with any boxed stuff, its dixie cups for him!

The 50 Most Loathsome People in America
It's that time of year again, and The Beast's list is out. Among them, Pamela Anderson, #33, isn't badly done:
- Charges: A dead-eyed pneumatic cartoon who’s done more to distort the female body image than Barbie and Hugh Hefner combined. There’s a phrase for women whose breast implants are bigger than their heads: "Fucking revolting." Selects her mates based on their level of childish helplessness and the size of their meat cannons and then acts surprised when they turn out to be violent, possessive assholes.
Exhibit A: "If I think too much, it kind of freaks me out."
Sentence: Old age.
