If you have a brand new computer, back up everything on it on a regular basis anyways.

I learn these things through experience, so you don't have to.

If you had any brains, you would have responded with a parodied Enrique Iglesias song.

Apart from one thing, Timothy McVeigh seemed like a decent fellow.

I think I can add some flesh to your second point... No one challenges rubes' alleged god given deeper earthy wisdom for two reasons. First, how do you argue with a rube? He's unread and doesn't consider alternative data. Ever try to debate against a person who's relying on a hunch? There's no point in it. So most thinkers don't engage rubes. No rube will go toe to toe with Stanley cavell at Oxford any time soon, so the rube wisdom goes forever unchallenged. Second, rubes deal in absolutes and shun analytical thought. Americans don't like to think. They find the idea that a hayseed can reach the same wisdom as a research scientist from natural intuition alone incredibly attractive. Believing the myth that Farmer John is as wise from old age as any formally educated person is from university schooling creates a false even playing field on which rubes can consider themselves as advanced as anyone else on the planet. This rube pride is really nothing more than the pervasive laziness of our culture repackaged - Americans want maximum return, minimal effort. The rubes are proud, but frustrated. They want respect, but they don't want to have to earn it on terms set by what they see as the "Eastern Intellectuals". What they're missing is that the these high fallutin' coastal measures of intelligence are not coastal at all - they're universal.

Maybe I should give them a hand - they're successfully rebelling against evolution, which is what they want, right?
Atticus has 2 main styles of arguing. You're seeing a common one with this, I call it a double weak strawman.

He first takes the strawman of a diner manager from a town in Kansas with a population of 200, and one quoted to have said something stupid. Her entire thought basis and intellect summed up in one quote- and then made to represent the average midwesterner. He then asks why the media speaks of the "wisdom" of the heartland when so often they're idiots. Next he tacks on the strawman of whether the rube fully appreciates the contribution of city dwellers to the arts and invention. Seb tacks on that the average Professor is surely more intelligent when we define intelligence as knowing things learned from books.

First let me concede some points: if you take the random professor from a random East Coast college and compare them to a random diner manager selected from a random town with a population of less than 500, the prof will win in most tests of reasoning, intellect and even perhaps common sense ( on common sense 51% of the time.) Of course your average resident of NY is not a college prof (Woody Allen movies aside) but probably a diner worker himself. So the first strawman is a silly choice to make the point. Surely there are a number of quite ignorant people in NYC also.

Second, no one quotes the average midwestern farm worker on the arts or invention. The arts generally require some education in the arts to "understand" or create that which is considered art. Invention takes a technical degree anymore. And really, I'm not sure that the big cities beat the heartland on artists or inventors, particularly if you count where they were born, not where they create.

More to the point, what the media quotes is the common sense wisdom of the common man- and while often a farmer from Iowa, the media image extends to New Yorkers. Hell, the NYC cabdriver was once the very embodiment of the wise common man- now they don't speak English mostly. Joe Six-pack? He was an actual man who lived in the Bronx.

The wisdom of the common man as to everyday common sense issues is not trumped by having multiple degrees. There are as many dumb people with college degrees living within a block of me now as there were dumb people with factory jobs living within a block of me where I grew up. And some of the smartest people I know have no college degree- I mean smart in the sense of reacting to everyday life challenges, not smart in knowing what Melville meant in Billy Budd or something like that.

I seen clips from this in LA- it is hilarious (some clips are on the webpage) if you have your diary you might want to consider- if they do the show there go.

Right. Like they'll ever do it where I live. I'd have to see it in NYC or LA, where a fetus is likely to be snatched right out of me. I doubt it's worth it.

Hey face-fuck, people from NYC and LA go to it, and they're smarter than you. You might want to reconsider and go.

Unless the random East Coaster is throwing a party for his dog and the media is intentionally missing the irony.
