Excellent post, if Atticus was talking about "the common sense of the common man." Unfortunately, he was talking about the common man's inability to grasp more complicated or nuanced ideas. By simplifying - or attempting to hijack - the debate to an argument about "simple common sense", you actually prove his point.
But I agree on the strawman bit. I have a big gripe about the way the media seeks out the lowest common denominator to get amusing soundbites. My building frequently has newspeople in it taking "man on the street" comments. They never approach anyone who looks like he or she will provide a well reasoned soundbite. They're perpetually interviewing the idiot with the mullet wearing an Eagles jersey and holding a bag from the Warner Bros store. "If I win the lottery? Yous'll never see me again."
ETA: I'm not calling you an example of the "common man". I'm merely noting that what you did in your reply was exactly the sort of simplification I think Atticus was lamenting. Presently, there is a fixation among many people to simplify complex issues. Sometimes, it works, but I find the people who can simplify issues aren't really simplifying them at all. Most of the good business people I know actually process the info from every angle very quickly, then make a simple judgment. they don't explain the process in their heads because (a) they don't have to, (b) its too complicated, and (c) most of the people following their orders wouldn't understand anyway. This sort of mind is not comparable to the rube who just acts on a hunch.

Atticus, please take the stick out of your butt and let this go. Whatever makes you think you can read her mind and know that she is thinking qualitatively rather than quantitatively?
I'm from a small town in the heartland and interpreted her comment as something completely different. I think it was about security, not superiority. Living in a small town gives one a sense (sometimes false) of security because of the numbers. Everybody knows everyone's business and you think you would know if one of your neighbors is heading off the rails. So you assume that any danger would come from a stranger and a stranger is going to stick out because you know everyone else. From that perspective, you think a woman carving up someone to take her baby should happen in a big city where people can't possibly know everyone rather than it being a woman you've seen in Piggly Wiggly every week.
Why pick on NYC? Not only is it the poster child of big cities, but check the TV schedule: three varieties of Law & Order and CSI:NY and that's just network. LA is the biggest city on the other coast and has had its share of crime news.
My translation is that this shattered her sense of complete security of believing that bad things should happen only in big big cities where the danger of the unknown is all around you, not in small towns where you are surrounded by people you [think] you know.
Maybe Atticus is right and she thinks people in NYC and LA are worse than in Kansas. But maybe he isn't.

Oh great. Now you are going to start ripping on the Heartland? Let me guess - you're one of the "Meat is Murder, Milk is Rape" types.

This was sort of the point I was trying to make yesterday when I suggested you and I could thoughtfully analyze our posts and separate out the lesser posts, but GGG was going to simply have to not post every other one.

Move recommendations for Kathy Sage:
Blue Velvet
Boys Don't Cry
The Naked Kiss
and, of course
Mississippi Burning
These would all be good ideas for TV shows - though, wait, Mississippi Burning was already done (Heat of the Night). Serializing Flannery O'Connor would be fun, too.
Fugee, I think you've got something here.

Do you think I'll get contempt if I write the following brief:
"Red blanket cat soap phone monkey bar Lou Reed and the Velvets Lucy in the Sky pie eye hello hey now my baby don't shake it like she used to mountain top candy carved melotrone sverethelementment, Inc. Cazart! Amen. Hallelujah.
I could argue the above with just as much effectiveness to this Court as any of the well reasoned arguments made in the past several months. Either as a result of activist bent or sheer inability to understand the statute at issue, it is clear this Court will not follow the law."
I am considering whether to argue gibberish to the Court in my next appearance. You think that will get me thrown in the clink? I am arguing before a political hack with brain the size of a walnut. The man's an utter imbecile.

I find that I really have to be careful to avoid confusion when he is in his Tribute to Paigow mode -- especially when she is also posting.
Anyhow, I am in a funk, and watching the Coastal Urban Sophisticates bash Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel just ain't cheering me up.
So, I will leave early and go to the mall. That may make me happy -- I still have some shopping to do, so I will go buy racy lingerie, or books, or music, or shoes.
