The Dad isn't going to want to wear upscale things if he's wearing torn t-shirts to work. Buy him a half dozen T-shirts with random sports/college names. Basic cotton shorts are fine. Don't buy things to pretty him up because he won't wear them.

I have plenty of wicking shirts that don't look much different that cotton shirts. Nothing really fancy/pretty about them.

Of course, I sometimes wear the short running shorts on long runs, so maybe I'm not the right person to ask.
