Forgot this part. Saint's ain't comin' to LA. Several of the assholes who run the league (Hi, Mr. Jones!) have from time to time declared, with noses skyward, that they'll expand to Los Angeles only when Angelenos decide to pay boatloads of bucks to the league, and even then only if we ask nicely.

To which (some community leaders aside), LA has responded with a yawn, a contented burp, and a return to the 8 billion other things to do on a Sunday (including watching the other teams on TV).

As a Syracuse alum who watched the Sugar Bowl fiasco with Auburn there (Fuck Pat Dye. He should have been shot.) and then like six months later watched Keith Smart hit a jumper with seconds left to steal the national championship, I would have no objections to seeing that stadium blown to bits. Crying in the aisles there twice in a lifetime is more than enough for me.

Agreed. It probably should have been on the list for demolition before the hurricane hit. Now it seems a no-brainer.

But a new stadium would take years even if every other building in the city didn't need to be rebuilt or repaired at once, no? To rephrase my question, where do you think the Saints will end up playing this year?
Baton Rouge, or Memphis.

That is not what I have heard. LA is to have the next team that comes up for grabs. I'm not saying I want one here because I could care less, I'm just saying that at the time of the last expansion, it was promised or whatever and I've heard rumblings of talks with every team trying to negotiate a deal with its present city ever since. The LA Vikings, etc.

I wonder if this will be a wake-up call to Americans about the effects of having a poor, uneducated underclass without options, opportunities, etc. They're harder to ignore now, aren't they?

Probably not - the predominant response seems to be "Oh, screw them, they are poor and lazy and can't afford anything better. Just like in Haiti or Southeast Asia"

I guess that raping, looting (real looting, not taking neccessities), shooting, etc. are ways that people ravaged by conditions can take out their grief and despair. Sort of a "I have suffered - now I will make others suffer more." People will act like animals if they are given the chance and the motivation. That's sad.
As I read this, the tune in my head keeps flipping between "Kum Bah Yah" and the original "I'd like to buy the world a Coke"

Pat Dye? That's like me posting about Vince Dooley.

Oh, darlin'. My mental image of you was mid-20s. I am just crushed by this discovery.

The discussion is schizophrenic, I grant you. Perpetual wooing, persistent losses. I remember an article in the LA Times a few weeks back in which Jerry Jones supposedly threw cold water on the whole enterprise, and undoubtedly that's coloring my view.

Does anyone else think that there should be a violent* uprising to take down cnn.com and replace it with some sort of service that actually reports news in a timely and accurate manner? MSNBC ain't it either. Just curious.

*Poor word choice, I know, but I'm seriously irritated at the moment.

There already was a few years back.

It's called Fox News.

2. Fox just had a highly educational special on how the hurricane is the direct result of the protests against the Vietnam war.
