Post-Labor Day

I thought that in the spirit of labor day, I would provide a bit of "Big Business" comic relief (at the expense of my friends in labor)

Bravo! POTD. Of course the left will never admit to their culpability for the damage unions have done to our once great nation or the cause of freedom worldwide. While its not bankrupt, per se, the destruction of public education in America should be noted as a footnote to that sign, although I guess the union's stupidifcation of America's children makes it less likely they will have the cashmoola for airline travel or cars or other things made of steel......

you know, at some point as the number of people with poor hearing increases, you might want to consider whether its the speaker's fault.

Does this mean that you agree with Spanky's post?

The one you were defending, where Spanky said that use of the median in a chart or table is deceptive, because it doesn't allow for the offsetting effect of the use of the mean. That post.

Since you have some form of scientific literacy, why don't you explain to Spanky what he didn't learn in junior high school about medians.

Is that what his issue was? I thought he was suggesting that referring to "medians" is somehow deceptive, apart from the failure to talk about (more politically pleasing) means.

Can you define median? Spanky astutely pointed out how it could have a whole great big range of definitions. I clicked the link that you provided but all I got was a Netflix ad, which I don't think is it.

I think we're saying the same thing. The crux of Spanky's agrument was that, because a median, which merely denoted the point at which there are an equal number of points greater and lesser in the sample population, doesn't allow the fact that some people are earning far more (e.g., Hank, Penske and Spanky) to swallow up the fact that more people are earning less, it is deceptive.

To rephrase, Spanky is calling the chart misleading because it proves that more people are earning less than are earning more. He finds it more accurate to say that it doesn't matter that more wealth and income is being concentrated in fewer hands, because his is one of the hands it is concentrating in.

A socialist would argue that this is proof that income needs to be taken away from those with more to give it to those with less, which Spanky would find to be inherently unfair and economically inefficient.

A capitalist would simply say that the chart indicated that the fruits of the economy are being shared by fewer people, and that a policy which is based on the premise that if you place fewer burdens on those with wealth, they will raise the playing field for all.

A Republican in the mold of many, but not all, of the Republican posters here would say that they got theirs, so fuck the folks who didn't.

It's not that he's on the side of the terrorists, so much as that he's a Godless socialist who would undermine our American Way of Life. This is actually worse than being a terrorist, because you can't profile socialists. Well, except for the hippies.

Odd -- I don't get the Netflix ad at all.

The link is to Merriam-Webster's on-line dictionary, at http://www.webster.com/. Definition 2a is:
  • a value in an ordered set of values below and above which there is an equal number of values or which is the arithmetic mean of the two middle values if there is no one middle number

To make it concrete, if you have five students in a class with test scores of 100, 76, 75, 74, and 70, the mean score is 79, but the median is 75.

I believe that was the gist of Penkse's first post, with the additional twist that he didn't need to actual see what we were talking about to react to the great news.
