There used to be a time where conservatives distrusted government and worried about the potential for abuse. Tossing around pithy phrases like "the possibility that the statutory language may lead to the abuse of prisoners" would make their blood run cold. I can't believe I miss those days.

Of course, if our overwhelming focus is maximizing economic utility, the passing of this generation's version of the Alien and Sedition Acts isn't so much of a concern.

2) I think I should have expressed it as "organized religion", which gets at Wonk's approach. It's not that God in itself causes the problems, it's that the worship of God through an organized structure (or even in a coordinated fashion) has let to a lot of bloodshed.
