Have you read the Economist article about the NIE? The article is titled "Stating the Obvious", notes that Iraq has been "counterproductive," and cites the NIE for the conclusion that, in the Economist's words, "The terrorist threat is now more acute than it was before the September 11th attacks on the United States."
The Economist also apparently reads your posts on this board, as they make a clear reference to you: "They [the report's conculsions] are hard to dismiss by any but the wilfully dim-sighted."
But keep posting cartoons. After all, the only way to defeat the terrorists is to smear Democrats as much, as stupidly, and as wrong-headedly as possible. Never forget: It was America's opposition to torturing prisoners and to imprisoning people forever without trial or access to courts that caused 9/11. Really.

A few days ago, someone told me that the war* in Iraq will soon be as long as our involvement in WWII.
I heard this this morning, and I wondered if we're ever going to get that sense of closure and justice again.
*I never know what to call our activities anymore. It's certainly not a war per Article I of the Constitution, though I suppose it is under the War Powers Act. But then, active hostilities ended two months after they began, but they (the news media and the government) still call it "the War in Iraq." I think one of our major problems is that we don't know what war is anymore.

Anyone up for the PB equivalent of the Death Board? We each pick 10 political players, and see how many have resigned, been indicted or otherwise fallen from Grace by year end?
I'll start with the Republican leaders in the House and Senate, but what cabinet members should go on the list?

As stubborn as he is, I'm guessing Rummy goes after the elections. Probably mid-December announcement, maybe Friday night before Christmas.

Now that Condi has been caught in her lie to the 9/11 Commission, she should be on the short list.

Damn. Responding to Hank. 65556 to 20. I have to stop doing that!

"We'll" not see anything. You'll be gone again before then.

You forget that the Bush administration is into loyalty above all else. Condi is not going anywhere. I am sure of that. I would give Rummy a 90% chance of staying. Everyone thought he would be gone after the Presidential election.
As for the Republican leadership in Congress, Frist and Hastert aren't going anywhere. If they lose majorities they may lose their leadership positions but not their seats.
My guess is that if the Dems are not able to retake congress then Pelosi will lose her leadership position. But her seat in Congress is as safe as they come.
I can't think of anyone else that will be leaving. Not much of a pool.

Gerry Studds invented that. Barney Frank perfected it.

So we set up the "cess pool" for potential crooks, liars, cheats and pederasts and place our bets. I'm thinking Hastert is the best bet to leave town on a rail. There was already a mild odor about him, and the stench has been growing stronger with each Foley revelation.
If you want to bet that no Republican leaves under a cloud between now and year's end, name your bet. The Republican scandals have been like clockwork, month in, month out, over the last year.

I don't think Hastert is going anywhere. There really is not much stuff on him. The Republican leadership and the administration is all pretty secure.
However I do think there are a lot of lower level Republican Congressmen on the chopping block. At the Top of the list is Doolittle. His time is definitely limited. That list that was linked before was highly politically biased. It listed a lot of guys that aren't that ethically suspect but who are in swing seats. It also did not list Republicans that are really ethically suspect but who are in safe Republican seats, so if they go, it won't help the Democrats.
