there are two ads? I pulled that transcript off the web, because I was too lazy to do it myself. But it's exactly as I recall the ad that ran last night on local television in the Maryland/DC market. Are they running nationally too?

Jonathan Cohn, three days ago:
  • . . . it seemed worth checking out this little tidbit, just to set the record straight: Could a patient on Parkinson's show such symptoms even while he was on his medication?

Fortunately, I have access to this thing called the Internet and this nifty search engine called Google. A few clicks led me to William J. Weiner M.D., professor and chairman of the department of neurology at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He's also director of the Parkinson's clinic there.

Even better, it turns out Dr. Weiner has a phone. When I reached him, he said he'd seen the ad earlier in the day and was fairly surprised to hear about Limbaugh's reaction. Here's why:

What you are seeing on the video is side effects of the medication. He has to take that medication to sit there and talk to you like that. ... He's not over-dramatizing. ... [Limbaugh] is revealing his ignorance of Parkinson's disease, because people with Parkinson's don't look like that at all when they're not taking their medication. They look stiff, and frozen, and don't move at all. ... People with Parkinson's, when they've had the disease for awhile, are in this bind, where if they don't take any medication, they can be stiff and hardly able to talk. And if they do take their medication, so they can talk, they get all of this movement, like what you see in the ad.

Weiner was careful to disclose that a researcher in his center recently received a grant from the Fox Foundation. But he assured me that he was on solid medical ground. I take him at his word, but I'll try to get some further confirmation later.

In the meantime, Weiner also pointed out something else I hadn't considered: Fox was actually being commendably nuanced in the ad. The actor could have said stem cells will lead to a Parkinson's cure, but he said merely that it gives patients hope -- which is accurate. There's no way to know for sure what stem cells will do for Parkinson's, or other diseases, but they have the potential to do so. The only way to find out for sure is to do the research that Limbaugh and his allies are bent on blocking.

Kinda makes you feel bad for whoever has to clean up after the birds are done, though.

Bush campaigns against same-sex marriage ruling
Published: 10/26/2006

DES MOINES - US President George W. Bush on Thursday seized on a New Jersey court ruling that may pave the way for same-sex marriage there as a political weapon ahead of November 7 elections.

Campaigning for a struggling Republican congressional candidate here, Bush declared: "We believe in family values, we believe values are important, and we believe marriage is a fundamental institution of civilization."

"Yesterday, in New Jersey, we had another activist court issue a ruling that raises doubts about the institution of marriage," he said at the first of two fundraisers he was to attend.

"I believe that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, and I believe it's a sacred institution that is critical to the health of our society and the well-being of families, and it must be defended," he said.
You just know that those gay registries are going to have only premium items on them.

Ya' know, I was reading that New Jersey opinion the other night at home, and I turned a page and accidently knocked my glass of milk over on the desk, in the TV room (where I guess we're not supposed to bring food and stuff) and so my wife got mad at me even though I cleaned it all up and I'm not sure if she's still even talking to me, so I guess I do have to agree now that gay marriage really does weaken traditional marriages.

No one tell President Bush, since he apparently is confused on the point and would rather foment such confusion, but the NJ court required civil unions, not gay marriage.

nonsense. The court required gay marriage. It remanded back to the legislature to determine what to "call" it.

As for equal protection, when do unmarried cohabitating heterosexual couples now get these same benefits?

Call me a cynic, but I'm thinking that the cognitive dissonance involved in even forming the thought "come with me, dearest, and we will wed, in . . . New Jersey" is going to make this ruling one of sort of limited effect.

Well, no speaking to each other during make-up sex, at least. There are limits, you know.

I think the President would be okay with this, as long as you are face to face. the other orientations are a recipe for trouble.
