I suspect that it is hard to run with a penis in your mouth.

Dude should have stopped after "Fields of Fire." An amazing book. After I read it, I tried to read some of his other stuff, and it struck me as bad Pat Conroy.
At any rate, if Newt Gingrich and Lynne Cheney can be mocked for their writings, I guess that Webb can as well. Though he ought to come up with something better in response. Like "I didn't realize that Senator Allen read my stuff. I'd have figured him as more of a fan of [whatever Newt Gingrich's book about the Civil War is]."

Ah... geeks.
Who else would come up with Fantasy Congress?
Quote:
Fantasy Congress™ offers you the power to "play politics." As in other fantasy sports, you - the Citizen - draft a team of real-life legislators from the U.S. Congress and score points for your team's successes. Join a league and compete against other Citizens, or form a league of your own! Play against your friends, family, bloggers, fellow politicos, or even a sitting U.S. Senator (one could be playing incognito, you never know!). On weekends, move Members of Congress into your active line-up or off your team to strategize for the upcoming week of legislation!
Educators, Fantasy Congress is the perfect tool for bringing home the process of legislation and the role of Congress to your students. Our database is the largest and broadest of its kind, and is updated daily. At the intersection of all of this information, students follow legislation precisely, monitor members of Congress of their own choice, and best of all compete with their friends in the game, in a classroom league or in informal leagues of their own design.
Now that you know what it is, make your decision: Watch politics or play politics.

Scary thing is, we've now reached the point where virtually every writer of fiction whom I've enjoyed could not meet the bar to run for office. Any writer with a goodly body of work - of good, complex, (dark?) work, is going to have some passages somewhere that offend someone.
There are so many good and valid reasons to get rid of Webb. (What a friggin' misogynist!) I'm sorry that this is the one that people think is important.

I don't disagree with you. Thre are certain things that will bar you from becoming an elected official that shouldn't be ap roblem at all. But I think it is getting better. It used to be if you were divorced you couldn't win.
Webb's book's maybe would not have been a problem in California, but in Virginia, even modern Virginia - game over.

Another profession that is barred from every running for office is stand up comics. At least most stand up comics that are any good.

Even if Webb loses, we can all thank him for making sure that Allen will never be President.

So you don't think it's a problem that the bill, once passed, has not seen anywhere near the funding planned, the funding that the bill was sold on? That Bush hasn't even requested much of it in his budget bills, given his other budgetary priorities?
If it is so successful, why aren't the Rs running on it?
|
(From the other board, on Burger's well-aimed orders
Hyperbole. "Anywhere near"? The funding the bill "was sold on"? This wasn't a funding bill - it imposed requirements - requirements that the education systems should have been meeting anyway - and then it provided some funds to ameliorate the pain. In the grand scheme of things, the feds don't provide local education funding, even when they announce that there are standards that all schools must live up to, and some schools aren't, so here's what we're gonna do. The "missing" funds under NCLB constitute a very, very small portion of total ed funding.
I'm still amazed that liberals can be so abusive towards this bill - it's the classic "enforce national standards for the benefit of the poor" type of law, but the vitriol suggests, to me, that the NEA carries way more weight (in instances where they are complately conflicted) than is healthy. This was a good bill, but you'd think Bush and Kennedy imposed it to steal books from kids.

Another law says, same-sex couples can form civil unions and if they do they get the following benefits: a and b. A same-sex couple sues and says, under the NJ equivalent of the equal protection clause, we should get c too. In your view, should the court say that the legislature can't let people get married? Or can it say that same-sex couples in (previously permitted) civil unions get c.
|
I think I would view this as a conflict of statutes, because either, independently, do not violate. It is only when read in conjunction that there is an issue. So either same-sex get c, or different sex only get a and b.
