Churchill was against it. He wanted us to keep pushing through Italy (so we could get to Berlin first and stop the Red from taking over Easter Europe) We did it mainly because Stalin wanted it. It was a huge risk and could have blown up in our faces.

Because it reestablished France's independence? Or because it prevented Hitler from controlling western Europe?

Makes you wonder how this list is so piss-poor in its accuracy and glacial in its responsiveness, where the GOTV list is laser-sharp and up-to-date.

I can't wait for this fucking election to be over
I promised myself not to post about this, but I can't take it anymore.
Probably all of us remember a certain twit from the old board who had a penchant for views that even Spanky would consider "liberal" and for getting himself arrested in Mexico for petty theft.
I don't live in his district, but have to drive through it to get to work. I don't know who had the stupid idea to donate to his campaign, but I am of the impression that he spent 95% of his budget on those fucking lawn signs that he's stapled to every signpost, telephone poll, and non-moving object in the beach cities.
FWIW, I really don't understand how someone to be elected to the CA State Assembly can effectively run with a slogan of "Anti-war Activist, Attorney," unless his platform if elected really IS to get a really, really stern resolution passed by the state legislature for Bush to ignore. Seeing this shit everywhere hurts worse than watching a Bob Corker ad.
Please, God, make it stop.

And propped up Stalin, which led to how many millions being killed.
It's just food for thought, and we can look back at everything and anything if we want to play the hindsight game.

Perhaps Slave really did prefer the taste of croissants with sauerkraut, and felt that early-1940s fad never should've ended.

The defeat of Germany would have accomplished both of those. Coming up through Italy would have accomplished that without risking a million drowned in the English Channel.

The Republican party is considered well organized because it is being compared to the Democratic party. But if you compared the organization of the Republican party, to the organization of five year old kids trying to score a goal on a soccer field, it would look pretty poor.

We lost what, a few thousand troops during d-day? And you think marching all the way up through italy and across the alps would have lead to fewer casualties while also preventing Stalin from taking over eastern europe?
Slave's point is a fair one, although I think it's hard to argue that the best way to defeat Stalin was to leave Hitler in power.

At the time of Normandy, the German's were reestablishing a line north of Rome where they stopped Allied advances until the distractions of the Western Front led to softening in Italy. We'd tried opening new fronts in Italy on a couple of occassions without success. So, without the Western Front, we might have been bogged down until the Soviets reached Paris.
What was the point of all of this again? Does Slave think all French are communists anyway, so we might as well have let Stalin have them?

No, I think he's saying that it's just as reasonable to question whether we should have undertaken to defeat Hitler as it is to question whether we should have disempowered Saddam Hussein.

Of course, we did a bang-up job after beating Hitler, with the Marshall plan allowing us to ease out of physical occupation relatively quickly. Did someone have a plan for what to do after Saddam fell?
Or were we just waiting for everyone to come out, cheer us, and rebuild the country in peace?
